Default F105

Is there anyone out there flying the century f-105 with a turbine? I picked this one up built for a ram500 but it's getting re-fitted for a P70 with custom tanks.

So THAT's where my P-70 is going...

Looks great. Please keep us posted on flying characteristics.

It's on one of the SKS Superman Jet Rally tapes, 2001 I think? I think the gear folded on landing but minimal damage.

Neat airplane, if only it was P120 sized. Do a search here, there were a few posts about this specific model and a larger version someone is scratch building.

Looked like she flew very well.

The landing gear is going to be very tough to do right in any scale, IMHO.

It is going to land hot no matter what due to the wing loading, and that is going to play hell on those overworked gear. I would really put my thinking cap on about those gear.

I for one would also look closely at the flaps as well, make sure they are powerful and properly rigged.

I really like the F-105 so if you need any more info I have a lot of material on it.

Mike Kulcyk in Austin has a scratch built version. I agree with Mr. Matt, the Thud is one of my favorites but it is going to be a diffucult model because of the long landing gear, and the thin wing. I would do some serious looking at the gear mounts, and the gear themselves before the maiden flight. I saw the flight at Superman it looked like it flew well on the 500 but the gear did fold on landing. It will be interesting to see it in action.

mike's redux is about ready to go. the one flown earlier this year was took off and flew like a scalded dog with the p80. not sure if he is going to do lubbock or what. if he gets it out any sooner i will take some pics.

he made his own gear for it and they were pretty nice.

roger and reid have his drawings and molds and are working on scaling one up. carlson was working on a 100" fuse one as well.

btw runway addition in process!

I have disassembled the airframe to repair the light damage from the one and only flight and plan to keep her as light as posible. The gear seems heavy duty but it has alot of wobble and I am not too excited about the retract frames, I plan to install bronze bushings and toss the plastic ones. She needs a little work but should be ready to go by july.

you might check where century jets uses the "pop rivet" connections in their gear. those tend to be weak points.

Not trying to knock your jet or anything, but it made the Chrasher 3 video, If I remember correctly it was the right landing gear leg did not lock and or folded upon touchdown.

Just to put an end to the speculation on the gear collapse, the 105 was mine when it flew at Superman, and it was a failure at the retract valve that caused the gear to fold and was in no way the fault of the gear. One of the retract lines got into the valve linkage and didn't allow the servo to complete it's travel. When we tried to retract the gear, the valve only moved part of the way. It moved just enough air to unlock one of the mains and the nose gear. With the valve stuck at partial travel all the air bled out of the system. After the flight I freed the servo, charged the system and was able to cycle the gear 5 times on one 100 psi charge. This was the first CJM 105 ever to fly under turbine power and with all the repositioning of gear something like this was bound to happen.

Here are a few shots of the fuel tank plugs, there will be three of them plus the UAT. Two will be aft of the main spar with the largest foreward of the spar. I plan to have the aft tank empty into the front one which will feed the center tank and then the uat, This will keep fuel right on top of the c/g. I am not certain of total fuel load yet, but I know it's more than 80oz and less than 100oz. Now to glass, sand, prime, paint and polish them to make a set of molds.

Does any one know who makes a kit or plans for the F105? I am definetly not ready for a turbine job, but would like to get a prop or EDF model if they are made. The Thud is one of my favorite planes, so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks much.

Gentlemen,

John Carlson has an F-105G that is a little over 100 inches long.
At the moment there is only one fiberglass fuse in hand, plus stabs and vertical fin.
He is in the very slow process of working on the molds for the wings.
John and I will work together on bringing it all together after he completes the remainder of the molds.
Scale gear will probably be made by John Messollela.
It will be powered by either an AT-400 or AT-450.
This is one of my all time favorite fighters that I doubt that any manufacturer will ever do in a large scale.

Thuds are awesome!

Buck,

You should see the fuse for the Thud, plenty of room for the AT-450 .
If I measured correctly, the top of the vertical fin is about 39" above the floor with the Thud standing on it's gear.
This will be an awesome machine when it's finished.

I'm looking forward to working on that bird. The 400/450 will provide plenty of boost.

I have the Century Jet kit and I think that it is great! it will need some work though. most of the high dollar $$ turbine guys will frown on this kit because it is too small.

Buck,
I won't forget to pull one. I have to let the skin on my finger's heal over from sanding the molds, Ha Ha.
