MW-44 Starting gas help
The mw-44 starting gas calls for 90% Butane 10% Propane with no dip tube so that it gets gas only no liquid. First of all I can't find this and if I find something close with no dip tube it has the same little push on top that the Coleman can has. The can needs to have a screw on top so that I can use the manual valve.
I know there are a few of these engines out there, what is everyone else using. Please Help.
Thanks,
Tom D.

RE: MW-44 Starting gas help
Look in your local camping/outdoor retail store (Gander Mountain up here) for a camp stove fuel called Powerfuel by Markill. An 8 oz orange tank sells for $2.97. The threads fit the Wren supplied gas valve. This is 70% butane/30% propane, without a dip tube, slightly different from that recommended, but the same, I believe, as Powermax.
I admit, however, to not having much luck starting the MW-44. Roger Parish recommends you make sure you use the lowest possible gas flow, allowing the temperature to gradually increase up to the kero ramp, starting with a cool engine. I know that long perisitant attempts to initiate the fuel ramp with temperatures in the 200-400 degree range don't work for me. Apparently, it should 'pop' and ramp up all within about 15-20 sec.
Wish others would chime in with tips on starting the MW-44.

Tom
I used colman powermax along with a BVM trigger value, fuel tubing , I could not find a adaptor for the wren value
Semper Fi
Joe
BVM trigger value it doesnt' require much gas to light off , great motors
Vince is right I forgot to mention the cut off value to restrict the gas and inverting the can

RE: MW-44 Starting gas help
I have owned a 44 now for 12month and have operated it for over 14hours of running, My friend has 17hrs on his.
I know of many more of them (there were 6 at this weekends meeting). I have never known a problem starting!
Please give more details.

RE: MW-44 Starting gas help
If you can`t find a gas can with the screw fitting you can use a BVM trigger type valve and powermax gas but you must use a regulator to restrict the flow. I use a remote needle valve of a OS .91 ducted fan engine and it works perfect. If you use too much gas flow it can couse problems with starting so I always try and regulate it so while im waiting for the ramp its just over 100 deg c.

RE: MW-44 Starting gas help
Thanks for the replies. I'm sure the power max upside down with the BVM trigger valve and some sort of valve for flow controll will work.
If Wren calls for 90% butane 10% propane and most people at least in the US are using 70/30 then why won't 100% butane work. What is the 10% propane for.
Thanks for the reply Grey. I'm not having any trouble starting. I havn't tried to start the engine yet. I was only trying to find the correct mix that would fit the Wren valve. This combination does not seem to be readily available in the states.
Thanks
Tom D.

RE: MW-44 Starting gas help
I use Ronson lighter gas with my simjet engines. They start flawlesly every time...cold or hot.
It just says Butane on the canister, so it might be 100%........ But it works great.

RE: MW-44 Starting gas help
Propane freezes at a much lower temp than butane. So adding the propane might act like an antifreeze.
In summer everyone'll probably be OK with 100% butane, but in a really cold winter, butane would freeze, hence no gas for starting, and propane would be necessary.
Just a thought.
Caravanners know this

I dont know......maybe it isn`t 100% butane, because it had no problem starting up in these conditions..........maybe you guys fly in even colder weather

RE: MW-44 Starting gas help
Hey guys,
I did start the 44 last night (SWEET) I think they will be throwing me out of the home owners association. The sound that little engine puts out is amazing.
I used 100% Butane and regulated the pressure with a remote needle. (Thanks Jason). I did order a valve to make it easier. The engine started fine and ran great. We will see what it does in the jet.
Thanks,
Tom D.
