Default Y/A F-18.. how much weight added in a tubine conversion?

Shaun or others who have done this...

How much weight gain do you estimate going from a O.S 91/Dynamax combo to a Ram 500 or simjet turbine with enough fuel for a 7 minute flight?

My F-18 is already pretty damn heavy at 14lbs empty (that's what 17 servos and ten channels will get ya!!)

Just curious..

Thanks in advance..

Wanted one with ALL the options

2 Elevator
2 Rudder
2 Flap
2 Aileron
1 Throttle
1 Wheel Brake
1 Gear Retract
1 Inflight mixture
1 Canopy open
1 Canopy lock
1 Nosegear servo

15 hmm guess I counted the flaps twice!!!!

Has anyone successfully flown a Y/A F-18 at 16 lbs with a Ram 500 or equivalent? I've always heard the bypass reduces thrust by about 1lb or so... 11 lbs on a 16lb+ airplane might be a little much??

Hank,

I will bet that the RAM500 will still put out more thrust than the Dynamax, especially once the aircraft starts moving. Your F18 with a turbine would probably be a very good combination.

I've seen many Yellow F-18 singles using stab controll only. I was with Bob F when he was test flew the prototype back in the mid 90's. It flew great with just two flight control servos. Saves weight and allows you two run a smaller battery.

Remember, if you stuff a Ram 500 in your model, you get to lose 2 servos! (Throttle and mixture...)

Yea, but you now need two for rudders, so it's a wash.

Hank, I flew a 19 lb. Hot Spot with a RAM 500. Little long on TO roll, but just fine in the air.

The model apparently has 2 rudder servos already...

Keep in mind that the ARF Hornet has flown many times with GWM FD3-67 (8 lb.) power. If you saw one, you know it flew much better than the fan powered one. I wouldn't be shy about flying a 17lb. hornet on 1200 size power at all.

Default hmm time for a wintertime project

Hmmm sounds AWFULLY tempting now..

I think after I get some funds together after teh SW fan fly it will be time to call Tam for the pipe and get a wintertime project started. My waiver is almost a year old and is starting to burn a hole in my pocket

Anybody got a good deal on a good running RAM 500 in a couple months time?
