Roo Gear
I am building a Kangaroo for a friend.
He gave me the kit along with a set of Spring Air retracts.
It has a Sophia J850 turbine with it.
We will be flying from a 600' Grass strip.
I already installed the Spring Air's before I found this wonderful forum called R/C Universe.
I have heard that the Spring Airs won't hold up to grass strips. Is this true?
Should I remove the Spring Airs and get a set of Robarts?
What part numbers do I need to order?
What about brakes and wheels?

ROO gear choices
Hi Barry...The question is not if they will work or not on grass because I have seen em used and used em myself on grass, they work great...the question is how much maintenance do you want to perform when you have a mishap...the Spring Air (although heavy duty strut) will bend a bit with little abuse on landing especially if the field is ruff...I have not found this to be a problem but it does change the way the ROO looks sitting on the ground. If you...say run off the end of the runway into some other type of surface, like a plowed field or such ...well then you have some re-shaping to do. Have fun! :-)
Having said all that...my choice is still the Robart style strut ...Beefy...

PS...I am ref. the Spring Air 702 series gear.

No SpringAir
Barry,
I agree with Todd, ditch the SpringAirs. My sons and I fly a lot, and I can tell you they simply won't hold up to the stresses of even the best landings on grass with a plane the weight of the Kangaroo. Even running off the end of an asphalt runway onto grass will bend them. Before I changed to the Robarts from Planes Plus, I carried an extra set of them with me if I went to an event just so I wouldn't be grounded.
After I changed to the Robart gear, I have had no more problems through more than 300 flights.
What type wheels and brakes are you going to use? I used a set of BVM Sabre wheels and brakes that I already had. I had to mill out the brake hub to 1/2 in. in order for them to fit the Robart strut, and they work great. Don also sells a wheel/brake set to fit them.
