Viojet with OS91vrdf....
Ramtec with OS91vrdf.....

What F20 is it?

I will soon get a thorpe f20. I will use a OS91 vrdf and Ramtec fan, the model should weigh about 10+1/2 to 12lbs.

Equally the thorjet fan units are good....

On the instruction book its says (Knights of the Air) . Its from West Friendship MD. It looks like a very old kit. This has a leading edge slats, flaps, air-breaks opt.

The plans show a byron set up. But I don't too

As for the intake , I'll measured 1-15/16" x 4-1/16" x rad, 7"
Does that sound for a custom inlet duct. And the exhaut 4-1/2" rad.

i have the f-20 of knight of the air too

even they claim 12 pound plane, i weighted all the component unbuild and came with 11 1/2 pounds ck various reviews and the final weight is between 13 to 15 pounds, so i recomend you the pusher byrojet and os .91. dont use a tractor fan ( except the viojet) i dont think a ramtec or dynamax will fly this plane with autority, you will need a lot of power for take off ; you have to consider that its a big airplane and requires a hudge exhaust or intake depends were you locate the fan, with the byrojet you dont have that problem and is cheaper than the viojet and will give you lot of thrust for take off, were you will need it more

If the duct diameter is really 7", there is no way a Ramtec, Dynamax, or Viojet will fly this model, that is without any engine problems.

Byrojett, OS .91 all the way bro[sm=thumbup.gif]

The (w), is 1-15/16,----- (H) is 4-1/16,(X)-- The length from the top of the intake which is on the body. to the bottom of the intake. That part I measured is inside the intake. 7".
I measured the inside, intake is (H) 4" X Around the inside of the intake is 6-1/2". From the top of the 4" to the bottom of the 4". That would give me the Area of the intake on 1 side.
Any thoughts

The Knights of the Air F-20 was designed to take the Byron fan. I have one that flew well with a Byron fan/Rossi 81 setup. It was by no means a speed demon, but had overall good performance. It's fine for any intermediate pilot looking to sink his teeth into jets.

You would need to make some significant modifications to extract the maximum performance from a tractor fan such as the Dynamax or Viojett. An absolute is a smaller exhaust. This is actually easily accomplished. Simply center an appropriate exhaust tube in the F-20 exhaust opening.

Inlets are more of a challenge. The Dynamax and Viojett require a full flow inlet for maximum performance. You would need to carve plugs from foam and lay up glass inlets to achieve this end. Alternatively, you can glue a foam pipe insulator around the leading edge of your fan unit to provide a "bellmouth" effect for airflow into the fan. This is not as efficient as a full flow inlet system but MUCH better than doing nothing to the fan inlet.

This plane SCREAMS for a turbine. That's what I intend to do with mine.

Good luck!

Tom

PS If you have those plastic fuel tanks intended to be placed in the wings, trash them. They're WAY too heavy and reduce the strength of the wing.

On my friends Byron F20- I put a Rossi 1.05 in that plane. It flew great with a cheater hole on the bottom of the plane. Glade I went a day early to set up the eng.
