I have the opportunity to purchase a Byron models F-86D, here are my questions:
1. Can it be converted to turbine? If so, which one is recommended?
2. Would it be suitable for a first-timer jet?
3. Are parts still available for this model?
Thanks in advance for any replies and comments. I'd really like to move into the jet set but want to investigate it some before I take the leap.

I had one.
And two of the other byron sabres.
1. It COULD be converted, but it would need very extensive modifications, and should only be done by an experienced person. It would need a LOT of reinforcement. Don't bother. Enjoy the plane for what it is, a great DF model.
2. Absolutely wonderful first jet. Flies like a *****cat, looks great in the air, easy to see. I miss mine.
3. In THEORY, parts are still available from Iron Bay Models. In practice, they really do not come up with the goods, they are impossible to deal with, and don't have much. If you are missing a major part like a canopy, call them first, ask them if they have it IN STOCK, and get the part in your hand before buying the plane. Otherwise, you may find yourself with a new model without a canopy, and any promises from Iron bay that they will be making up a batch of parts "sometime soon" are pretty worthless.
But as long as you have wings, tail, fuse, canopy, what else do you really need? Everything else can be made up.
Go for it, it's a great model, but what engine and pipe is in it? What price? What shape? What retracts?

I had one of these, and would have to say that it is a very good flying model.
It isn't extremely fast but looks very scale in flight.

If your piloting skills are there, I wouldn't hesitate to use this as your first jet. Jets fly so good that I think they are easier to fly that props.
The learning curve is the throttle response is slower and will require you too think ahead of the model. Also learning to get it slowed down to land is a little bit of a curve, but not a problem.

With the help of a experianced jet modeler, I would say go for it.

After that I had a BVM F-86. BV's is ALOT faster, but it's probably one of the nicest flying jets in the world. The one I'm talking about is the Ducted fan version. I also had a turbine version, that flew beutifully, but nothing can match the flight performance of the fan powered one.
The wing loading was so light that it grooved very well.
I would think that BV's 80" F-86 should be close to that since it's so big.

Thanks for the info. The kit is complete as far as parts go. I was just wondering about extra part in case I needed them in the future due to a mishap or something. It does have retracts, but I can't remember which ones. It doesn't come with any engine or pipe. I really want to get into turbines and not mess with fans (I hope I don't offend you fans of fans!). The condition is good and it hasn't been started to be built, the manual is there, so... pretty much everything except radio, brakes, and thrust source. What do you guys think a reasonable price would be for such a kit?

$500 or so seems to be the going rate for an untouched byron sabre. It varies. A built one may go for LESS than that, even with all the equipment in it.
If you are thinking about just going turbine...skip this plane. By the time you have gotten a good OS91, pipe, and byron fan, it's another $400 plus. You don't need brakes. Standard servos are fine for this plane. But unless the thing was a real steal, or you happen to own the engine and equipment that goes into this plane already, you are looking at $700-1000 to get into the air. Save that for a turbine instead.
If you want to get your feet wet, find a built one...there are so many bargains around in the way of used DF stuff...I would not pay more than $500 or so for a Byron Sabre WITH all the gear in it.
