I'm interested in getting into turbine jets. I have a Uravitch F-80 and was told by a turbine flyer that I'll need 12 lbs of thrust. Ths kit has a 64" wingspan and weighs between 10 to 13 lbs. Because of the choices of turbine power plants out there, can anyone steer me to a reliable manufacturer and somewhat economical in price. Thanks for any replies. Kurt.

Probably the most economical route, if you are handy with a ball driver, is to build a Wren.

Their support is legendary.

I agree, Wren makes great turbines, you can build it yourself or buy them allready build. Besides their support is excelent and they are allways there to help you.

What is the general advise on the cheap Chinese jet engines that are mentioned on RCU ?
Are they the equivelent of the ASP's and other O.S. copies of two and four stroke's ?

Kurt...the best advice I can give you is to see what the other local jet guys are flying....and get one of those. That way, you'll have a base of knowledge to draw on. I personally have Jetcats....but I have heard nothing but good thing about the ones already mentioned.

Thank you for your replies. I also came across Modellbau-usa they have their own turbines and also sell the Jet Cat brand. The local guy I talked to flies a Jet Cat, but the sticker shock for a first timer isn't appealing. Modellbau-usa is saying that all of their equipment is serviced and parts replacement is done in Florida. It sounds as if most of these companies are operating through US retail outlets. I haven't heard from anyone operating this brand. I'd like to hear from someone before I buy. Thanks again.

Frank Tiano sells the same engines under the name of FTE. It's where I bought mine (FTE T-500) and thus far with 21 runs on it has performed flawlessly: http://www.franktiano.com/turbines.htm . They have provided great support for a first time turbine guy too. John Meanor has been a great help and always quick to respond to my e-mails and phone calls. Super people there.

That was just one case... I've heard differently about Robarts service a few other times on this site...Maybe Robart is changing its ways, but for me personally I'll stand back and observe for a while to see if this is truly a change on how Robart plans to service these engines. A search in the jets forum will share the story with this.

What are you currently flying with your tubine? Weight? I plan on using one in an F-80 with 10 to 13 lbs of weight.

I'm flying an 18.2 pound Reaction 54. ( http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=2690396 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfi...51/Ze85842.jpg ) It's not fair to compare it with other jets since it has so much wing area (1450 square inches) and the wing loading is low. But in terms of how my FTE T-500 runs it's been great since the first start. I would have liked to have gone with a Jetcat P70 at the time (since the P60 hadn't been released yet) but for me the cost was beyond my slim budget. I went with the FTE T-500 and have been very pleased with the quality and service.
Cheers,

One of these posts mentioned Robart. I sent them an e-mail about the FunSonic turbines and I'm still waiting to hear from them. Maybe the negative posts about their poor service and response is true. Anyway, I'll probably avoid them.
