Default Quick UAT question

Guys,

Am installing a UAT and an easy option for me is to have the UAT mounted vertically (with cap at top obviously!).

I know the preferred option is at a 45 degrees angle and the least preferred with it lying flat at 0 degrees. What are the thoughts of mouting it at 90 degrees upright?

Thanks,
Mark

What's wrong with having it lie flat?

In my Rafale, I have it flat and facing backwards (top to the rear of the plane). Is that a double crime? Never had a problem with it mounted that way.

I am probably going to mount it the same way in my Hunter, as it makes the total system installation easier.

It will actually work in any position that allows the trapped air to leave the UAT while fueling.

the only problem with it lying flat ( horizontal ) is that you will have to pick up your plane to get the air bubbles out if you have air in it.....which can happen when you defuel

The problem lies the same as the jetcat filter for there turbine. If you leave mount it horizontally you leave the option for a bubble to get trapped in the system. As you are fueling the system has to vent air. one you past the vent line air has no place to go and hence you get a TRAPPED BUBBLE. Hope this diagram helps some.

However, the UAT is designed to opeate with a lot of air in it and still get no bubbles.

I have sucked a UAT comletely dry and flamed out my engine, the bag in the UAT will give good fuel flow until there is almost nothing left in it.

Most air bubbles I've seen that flame out engines were not related to teh UAT, it's usually a faulty connection point that's not properly wrapped in safety wire, or a bad connection at a festo or something like that.

both seans r ( both last names also begin with r ) are right.....i have seen on a horizontal mount people pick up their jet to shake the bubble out and the turbine sputtered for a second.....oooooue

Lying flat is fine, but you need to purge it if you empty it.... Bubbles can get trapped in the cap assembly.... If you have run it empty, or it is new, or has not run in a long time, it is best to get it running, and then hold the plane up so the cap is vertical to be SURE there is no air in the system.

I have one flat in my F-16, and it needs purging. (but functions perfectly when opertated correctly).
I have one vertical in my Bobcat, and it is bullet proof.

My 2 cents,
David

david

i was just cruisin the bvm site looking at f-4s and i found a pic of you and simon to...and it said you go to hong kong a few times a year.............great

about 4 years ago he advertised a amt-180 and said " just back from the factory for a tune up"...so i bought it and wired him the money....the motor arrived and i put it on a roo.....it never made rpm after 3 tries so i called amt and gave them the serial # and they said " that motor hasnt been in for 3 years"....so i e-mailed him about it and he said " actually i listed it for a friend just send it back to me and i will send you a check"...he did just that

but

he did not send me 30 for wiring the money over there or 70 for returning the motor to him ..totaling 100

i was not happy with not starting it...having to call amt nor having to stand in line at dhl for an hour or the hour round trip to get there and back

so next time you see

SIMON TO...

...GET MY 100 BUCKS FROM HIM THAT HE OWES ME BECAUSE OF HIS FRAUDULANT AD HE PLACED ON RCU....AND send it to me will ya...

.TELL HIM I WILL FORGIVE THE TIME HE OWES ME IF HE GOES AND HELPS THE POOR FOR 5 HOURS......OR HE CAN SEND A CHECK TO A CHARITY FOR 3,000 AS WE BOTH HAVE THE SAME HOURLY RATES

thanks
