Finally after countless flights and gallons of Jet A, I fixed all the little cracks and repainted the Rafale. This has been a great little jet, and flies like a Champ. It weighs in a 15.7 lbs dry and flies off grass with ease. Last Sunday I flew for the first time with the new paint job, thanks to Floyd D. for the pictures.

Chris,
Very nice! Will we see that at Liberty Jets 2003?
What is the wingspan and length of that jet? I've got a PMP Gripen on order and I'm wondering if its about the same size. I'm planning on a 12 lb. turbine for power and wondering how its going to handle the weight.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,
here's the dimensions:
1/9th scale, 50" wing span, 70" length
Spring air 302's , Robart struts, Glennis wheels, Ram 500R, 48 oz of Jet A for a 6 minute flight.
Next year I'll stay clear of those dam runway lights!

Looking good Chris, do you use aileron mix in the canards or only elevator? What's the percentage of mix?
Good looking bird, best wishes for many more flights to come

Chris,
Thanks for the dimensions. Pete Powell (PJP jets - he took over the old PMP kit line) is making the Gripen kit for me and he said it was 67" long and 40" span. It sounds like it is going to have a smaller wing area then your Rafale. I hope it flys OK. Pete said some guys have converted the Gripen to a turbine and it flys well, but he didn't have any specific data about weight. I think I'm going to put a PST J600 in mine if that engine continues to do well with customers that have them now.
Ditto on the runway lights. My new Kangaroo got a pretty good crunch on the leading edge from one when the brakes ran out of air and the test pilot, who was unfamiliar with my 8U radio setup, looked down the see if he was actuating the right switch. ..

Hey Todd,
I use elevator mix on the canards, it's a single servo setup. I have seen the canards setup with airleron mixing, CRAZY roll rate! To much for me.
I can't remember what the percentage is? I set up the radio in 1996 and have't really changed anything.

struts
Do you use the Robart struts on the mains too? I have a Rafale also and use the BVM wire struts on the mains, a little too stiff. Which Robarts do you use to get the correct angle for the main tires. My Rafale also flies very well, but with I had another pound of thrust or so from my 500. The PJT 600 looks interesting for this model.

Thanks George,
hope to be flying with you in PA next year!
Kelly,
the PST should be fine for the model, I plan on installing a P-80 in an Yellow F-18 ( When I get one). The 18 will need more thrust to get it off grass with the scale gear.
I'm not using brakes, you really don't need them on grass. The plane doesn't move on pavement at idle, so I didn't want to add the weight. Performance is fine, top speed is around 130 mph. You could improve this by adding gear doors, my plane has some big draggy holes cut in for the gear. Plus the wheels hang out in the air stream which doesn't help.

Thanks Chris,
If the PST isn't crazy enough I also have a TJT2500 (our version of a KJ-66) According to Kraivuth the F-18/PST moves along pretty good but I don't think it will break 200mph in this combo. We'll see I guess.
The guys are just in the process of moving my club here in Vancouver. The good news is we'll be losing the 350ft strip in favor of one that's ~600 or more. Its going to be VERY hard to work on clear days in the summer!
What kind of takeoff/landing roll did you need for the Raf/RAM500 combo? Great looking airplane.

Kelly,
it really depends on the OAT. Last Sunday it was 42 degrees F and my takeoff roll was around 300 ft. Landing is between 200 - 300 depending on my final aproach speed. The Rafale slows up real nice with full control.
In the summer when it's hot, takeoff distance can easily double.
