Any Battlestar Fans out there
I am not sure how many other jet guys like Battlestar but I was a fan of the original and I am an even bigger fan of the new series on Sci Fi. With being a fan and a jet pilot I was wondering if anyone has ever made a RC version of the Colonial viper??
I personally don't have the skill to design and build one from scratch but I sure think it would be cool if you could do it.
With all the powerful turbines out now I am sure power would not be a problem. In fact you would not even have to stick to the original design that I think would require a lot of modification to fly. Now there are the mark II and Mark III venisons that are more aerodynamic.
I think something like in these two pictures would be possible, any way it sure would be cool to try.
Also here is a link to a video of a 6 foot + model rocket viper fly.

I don't know about that. The CG would have to be VERY far aft, and then the moment arm for pitch control (assuming ailevators) would be mighty short. If you could add canards, it would help a lot, but then it would not look right. It would help a lot to make it a twin engine turbine too, to keep the thrust line low. With the pitch issues mentioned earlier, I doubt you want a P-160 up high in the center nozzle!

If you did it more like picture # 2 I think the CG could be worked out and the moment might not be too far off from some of the deltas flying today without canards. As for placing the turbine up top, no way, I was thinking single turbine on centerline hidden between the two bottom false nacelles.
Enquire - Funny ... If that bird is still flying I am sure it won't be for long, since the Enterprise will surly fall apart without Scotty. ;-) lol

Lol, we are getting old... poor Scottie.
About the viper... with some gyros and a centered thrust line i believe that it would fly decently, at
about 2.5 meter length and a 20 to 30 lbs thrust turbine...

I say yes to the new Viper shown.
Could have small clear canards up front if needed. Wheels will be ok for this since AMA (as far as I known), doesn't yet have a SIG for things that belong in Sci Fi or Fantasy (i.e Robotech, Crimson Skies, etc.).
Plus, a single turbine on the lower centerline with bi-ducts to exit the scale bottom turbos should be workable. (edit-added this last line to my post).

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been a fan of Battlestar Galactica for a long time. Unfortunately I don't get the new series on TV where I live.......bummer!
I have ALWAYS wanted to do a Viper model since I was a kid watching the original series with the actors and their awesome 70's hairdo's! LOL
The center picture looks pretty good I think. If the basis of the Viper construction was a flying wing type of plane then why not eh? With good painting techniques, anyone would be able to tell what it is right? Seeing how the plane would end up being a "little" off scale, why not put the engine in the middle of the three engine exhausts? Guess what I'm saying is anything is possible!

Found it right here, at the scratch build forum:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3246138/tm.htm
I think that it was not tested in earth´s gravity yet...

RE: Any Battlestar Fans out there
Well after reading these posts I am guessing that it has never been done before. It is a project I would love to do and the more I think about it the more I think it could work, Alas with two little kids my time is taken right now but perhaps in a few years. Maybe while I'm at it I can get a 1st generation Veritech fighter flying...

RE: Any Battlestar Fans out there
So...anyone taken up the challenge to build a viper yet ?
I have seen some build a depron version, and rocket version.......so whow`s building a turbine version ?
Hers a video of the rocket powered one again
http://www.galaxyphoto.com/rockets/Viper.mpg
Rocket build : http://www.galaxyphoto.com/rockets/viper8.html
At a decent size, it should fly ok
So say we all.....

Much better than a Viper... this one can outperform your X-wing wannabe ...
Best regards, Enrique

Now that is cool....
i guess the warp drive is connected by a second planetary gearbox to the propulsion system on the front.?
i asked our home computer and it replied that it was called in the late 20th century a "paint stirrer"
however i-wikipedia also called it a "proppellor" what the heck is that?

RE: Any Battlestar Fans out there
Likai you are right. Two of this models (Storm) where built here and for our surprise they both flew very well.. The first one was fitted with canards, and flew great. ( As I was the one that suggested installing canards on it I was penalized on doing the calculations for the new CG and test fly it, LOL) .. Later, a friend bought one of this and flew it without canards pretty much the same. So I guess that a Viper would be fliable if someone builds one with a decent wing loading
and appropiate power.
Sandor: I don´t know if the Enterprise is airworthy, but anyway I liked it!
Sonnich: That model is great!

Viper MK VII looks like it might be easier to make work: The nose sides look like it would work as a cranked delta wing.
