My ass is on fire! YA Starfire
Sad to say we caught this Plane on fire on the first start up. It has a Artes super bee turbine mounted 3/4" from Tams pipe. We got a normal propane start on the way to ramp up the bellmouth seemed to be glowing red and the side of the fuse caught fire. The first fire extinguisher didn't work and by the time we got another it was bad news. Does anyone have the back half of a YA starfire that could be use to make a mold?

Unfortunately it was power. I guess when your bird is burning power works. CO2 would have been a better choice.
Keep your friends close, your enemy's closer, and your fire extinguisher closest of all.

This is specifically why this flying season I chose to fly only airplanes that had exposed engines And then, I bought the Superbandit and F-15 for next season cause I didn't see any pipes have issues this year and then you show up. Great.
I have no idea why this happens to some people and not others and am not smart enough to figure it out. But I've lost two airplanes now specifically to internally mounted turbines for differing reasons, however had I been flying an airplane with an exposed engine, the airplane would have been saved.
Bud, I'm sorry for your loss, but at a minimum, keep a CO2 with you or buy a Halon Ext off ebay for around 50 bucks. I keep both pretty close.
In hindsight besides the Fire Ext, would you have done anything different on alignment of the pipe and exhaust of the engine??

...now you see why i mount all my turbines way aft, directly in the tailpipe, without thrust tube.
Even works on a twin-KJ powered F-15 from Avonds.
Cheers

Sorry about your loss, welcome to the world of turbines........You've been inducted.
Not sure but I couldn't tell from the photo's, did you use BVM heatshield. That stuff save my first turbine jet when my Simjet 2250 shot out fuel and flame, the heat shield basically gives you time to put the fire out.
Do you have any pictures of the turbine setup prior the carnage?

Sorry about your loss. As a general rule, is better to not test run a turbine installed in a airplane, unless it is a exposed engine design.. in part this is why delta flying wings and twin booms are so popular in the turbine comunity.

Sorry for your loss. As others said next time go for CO2 fire ext. at least. Halon is no longer permited in US because of the ozone layer. I am using a replacement for halon its called halotron also more expensive than CO2. I pay $145. for a 5 pound ext. I hope not to use it.
