Default Engine install help - Skymaster Hawk

I am trying to install my Artes Rhino in the SM Hawk. Using SM tailpipe for this plane. Artes said to allow 1/4 to 1/2" space between end of engine exhaust cone and front end of pipe. For fitting in this way, I had to make a hole in duct junction for starter motor to protrude. I then trimmed off all of the rear of the duct that I could, up to bottom resting on bulkhead. This makes the front of the engine about 2" into the duct with a 1/4" to 1/8" clearance between engine diameter and duct (see pics). Question- Is this enough clearance for air to cool engine? Don't want it to run hot while taxing. Sorry if this is stupid question but my first jet install.
Thanks for any advice. Wayne

Default RE: Engine install help - Skymaster Hawk

Wayne,

You should be fine with that setup. I have an Artes Super Eagle 120 in my Phantom and it doesn't run too hot. The fact that you have the gap between the turbine and the tail pipe will enable the exhaust to draw in air. This will keep your exhaust temp lower and it will move the air past the engine. With my installation I can touch my engine while it is idling. From the picture you included, it looks as though your wheel wells are also open to the engine compartment. Air will also be drawn through them.

One question I have with your installation. Do you have a FOD screen on the front of your Rhino, or at least in the intakes? If not, I would strongly suggest that you install the FOD screen. I have included a picture of the FOD screen in one of my intakes. Maybe someone else will pipe up here.
