What turbine to use for the Yellow A-4 Skyhawk??
Hey guys, canyou tell me whisc is better in terms of reliability, the Jetcat P-60, or the Wren-44 gold with autostart. I know the Jetcat has 13lbs of thrust comared to the wren @ 8lbs, but I dont need tons of power because its going into my Yellow ARF A-4 Skyhawk that weighs about 9-10lbs 56" length 40" wing span. What do you gus think? Bothe cost the same.....$2495.00

I dont own either one but Ive seen a few of each at different jet events. For the A-4 Id be inclined to go with the Wren for reasons like size, weight and fuel burn. On the other hand the P-60 might be the way to go because it can power a wider range of larger airplanes down the road. From what little I know they are both fine engines and Im sure you'll be quite pleased with either one.

Will 8lbs be ebough for that kit? I mean, I've seen it with a Dynamax and it flies pretty marginal.
I'm no turbine expert by any means, but a P-60 will fit on far more airframes than a 44mm. Wren 44 is great for those very few Sierra airframes and similar.
Good luck!

I still got the Heli's and they are still cool.....but I'm and X-Air Force F-16 Pilot who loves Jets! Guys, how is the p-60 more Versitile? I was told that you lose some thrust when you put the P-60 in a jet, compared to not losing anything with the wren-44. Also, how did you get the wren turbin up to 14lbs of thrust?

John,
ALL turbines, even the Wrens, lose a little thrust when they push the exaust through a pipe. They lose no thrust only in a pipless airframe like a Bobcat or the like...
I think what Shok meant in his statement was, he has flown the 44 in airframes up to 14lbs. in weight, not thrust.

8 lbs. is plenty of thrust for the Yellow A-4. Before JetCat, before the "Hammer," Bob Wilcox flew a Yellow A-4 with an FD 3/67 and it was awesome. Remember the Golden West Turbine?

You just can't compare the static thrust ratings of DFs to the thrust rating of turbines. They're not the same animal.

Im not certain about this but I think the Wren tailpipe design still has a thrust decrease, it is just LESS of a decrease than a straight thru constant diameter pipe. I dont think it is actualy a thrust increase. I'll certainly stand corrected if Im mistaken.
The Wren 44 is plenty of power for this airplane assuming it is done correctly.

I beleive they call it the "Wren Thrust Augmenting Pipe". It increases thrust but I don't know off hand by how much or what sizes besides the 54 is available. There is a formula for the dimensions that would apply to all engines.

These pipes have a diferent shape. The first get wider, and then have a cylindrical shape. The thrust increase is paid with a loss of thrustvelocity.

The Wren thrust augmenting pipe design does increase thrust.
I used the Wren (John Wright) design specs when I built a pipe for a JetCat Titan in a Eurosport. I got a 3 pound thrust increase using this pipe as compared to running the engine with no tailpipe.

Yes, I was thinking that maybe there is an increase in static thrust but a decrease in velocity but haven't really read up on it.

Ok, I stand corrected. So now if i understand correctly an increase in static thrust would mean greater acceleration ? And a decrease in exhaust velocity would mean a reduced top speed of the airplane ?
