RE: Nitro models pusher Bobcat?
Update
The jett sj60lx was installed on my bobcat....The engine was strong and pushed the bobcat along pretty good....The negitives are this: With the way the tank is installed it make for a poor solution when the 60lx is involved.....This engine is super high performance and needs to run on it's side with the tank as high as possible above the carb... That said the engine runs to lean from the get go and heat becomes the issue as well as fuel foaming....Some possible solutions include a bubbeless tank....I didn't want to go that far with it as I still would have the engine in the straight up position which is not good.....But, she would scream for about a 60 seconds of flight before stalling or burning a plug......Next, I mounted a os 91 fx in it's place....Used the master airscrew 14/7 cut down and let her rip......The engine was receptive to the set up and ran good....But, the speed I was looking for just wasn't there.......It's a shame that we are so limited to the prop choices......That's the down fall isn't it.......So for me I put the os 55ax back on her and the apc 11/7 prop.....Will go with this for now as I think I have ran into a road block with what's at hand and can be used in this application....She's a great looking airplane and a real head turner......As for the os 91 fx, I shoe horned it into a hanger 9 raptor.....With a 12/10 apc prop she should blister the sky....Haven't flown her yet as I was called away......You can see pics of the installed motor in the thead hanger 9 craptor......And in closing, the jett sj 60 lx will be going in a strega....should work out nicely in this application......Thanks to all for you idea's and insight........Mark

Mark.
You have to go with some kind of bubbleless tank. the doubled baack klunk loop would hangup on the internal plumbing so after 1/3 fuel used inverted flight not an option. High G turn rolls it would go lean.
SOLUTION I got a 12 oz from Jett Engineering.
Currently Running a sport Jett 50. and a 10x8 APC.
Soon I will have some 1/2: stainless tubing to redirect the exaust aft. the groove in the mufflers tail cone will be perfect fo an O-ring to prevent metal-metal contact rattle.

I put a os91 on mine but I used 16x10 3 prop and cut it down. I too not happy with the speed. I put a tettra tank in it and it runs fine. But the speed isnt what I expected. I got a jet 50 with a left crank so now I can put on any size prop but right now I have it on a sr71 blackbird to test it.

RE: Nitro models pusher Bobcat?
I think the stock Bobcat is pretty draggy and therefore quite slow.
I know that the World Model Skyraider Mk2 with a TT46Pro up front will *eat* my Bobcat with an ASP/Magnum 52 and APC 10x8P in back.
The Bobcat has big wheels and undercarriage legs hanging out in the breeze adn those tail booms are quite thick too.
Seems to me that even with a strong .50 engine, these airframes are already hitting a drag-wall that would need a *whole* heap of extra power to overcome.
I notice that they (well mine anyway) don't pick up much extra speed in a vertical dive, a further indicator that they've hit a wall.
We race trainers around here and it seems that there's very little difference between an airframe powered with a .46 and the same airframe powered with a piped .61.
The best way to make the bobcat go fast would probably be to fit retracts and make new (thinner/sharper) tailbooms.

Where did you get that nice engine mount??
Where did you get that nice engine mount??
I made it, after hours at work out of a bit of 6061-T6 aluminum.
drilled and tapped the top to mate the Jett BSE 50.
bottom is drilled and tapped too. 1/8" plate on the bottom of fuse drilled 4 places to e a 1 piece washer.
the wood supplied was junk, crushed under heat, oil and vibration.

My problem is slowing up, not going quick!

RE: Nitro models pusher Bobcat?
Gofastz,
Did you use the stock fuel tubing? If so, I think the diameter is too small for the Jett. Also, you might need to set the needle very rich on take-off so the engine doesn't go lean when it unloads. For example, my Diamond dust is almost 4-stroking on take-off but will quickly get on step and scream in the air. If I launch with the engine peaked, the engine will die before I complete a circuit.
The best of both worlds would be a remote needle. For speed, you will need to clean up the airframe... a lot. Search the extreme forum to see what people do to get higher speeds. Then practice smoooooth piloting. Even the cleanest plane will not reach top speed if you yank and bank it (not saying this is what you do).

Mark,
I did not use stock tubing.....I used a sullivan 14oz tank.....However, your idea on larger tubing is super......Dub also said to mount the remote needle valve different along with the info of not using the motor in the upright position....You guys are the greatest!!!!

RE: Nitro models pusher Bobcat?
Are all of the new Bobcat 50 planes retract ready or is there a special place to look for them. The add on their website doesn't say anything about retracts.
Thanks Terry

RE: Nitro models pusher Bobcat?
I got my Bobcat in today.I must say that having flown Aeroworks 35% arfs and building for 20+ years,Im impressed with the quality for $139.In no way is it "the best" I have seen but hey for the money,Im well pleased.I have a few questions though on set up.
1. Im using a Tower 75...I remember reading CG issues. What was the final outcome if someone could chime in.
2. I got the retract version..what retracts are compatible with it.I have noticed that the manual leaves something to be desired LOL and really doesnt say.
Thanks in advance for any info.Ill post some pics when I get done!

RE: Nitro models pusher Bobcat?
I am wondering if variations in the manufacturing process of the ARF is leading to a different angle of incidence of the stab and wing. Does anyone that is achieving great flight performance have a Incidence Meter to compare the angles? I think CG along with stab and wing incidence information would be beneficial. The only other factor (that I can think of) would be engine incidence.
Thanks,
Larry

RE: Nitro models pusher Bobcat?
hey guys alot of you wont use a fourstoke in this plane but would you buy one to use if you could reverse the engine using higher pitch tractor props i would take a look on horizon they have reverse cam gears for 13 to 14 $ that do the job and the club saito guys say it will work fine all you need then is the turbo header here in the RCU market place to boost that power i think i would be quite awsome

OK, my Bobcat is finally ready for the sky. All I need to do is balance it out. Because the fuel tank is so far back, I assume you must balance the CG with the tank full, correct?
Any consensus on where the ideal CG is?

the fuel tank is actually slightly ahead of the cg... balance it empty.
