i am currently building a hot spot for my first turbine jet. I am going to purchase either a 12 or a 17 lb engine. What thrust level best suits the hot spot?? I am NOT a speed freak but i want plenty of power to climb out and execute vertical. Thanks in advance for all inputs. russ

A Hotspot will fly on 12 lbs if you keep it light but if it's performance that you want you can't argue with power !

Forget the 12 lb. engine. Use nothing less than
the 17 and personally I would buy a 120 size
and use my throttle or program the ecu for a
lower thrust until I was confortable with the
plane. Then when you move to a larger plane,
which we all do, you will have the engine already.

We have a couple of customers who run HotSpots very successfully with SimJets 2300s and know some guys in Europe with SimJet 3000s on their HotSpots.

I have three hotspots, all on 17-23lbs of thrust. Forget the 12lb turbine. It's not for this plane.

I must agree with Super'.

I flew my Hotspot at ~18lb on its first flight and it seemed about perfect. Mine is around 27lb with 2.5L of fuel. I built it heavy because I don't plan to keep the TJT derated after the bugs are all worked out of the airframe.

Install a TJT 3000 turbine you will love the power of it. I am thinking of a hotspot also.

I am building a hot spot and plan on putting my simjet 2300 on it. The 2300 is the same size and weight as the 1700 so why not use the the 2300? The 2300 will give you all the power you are looking for.

thank you for everyone responding on their thoughts for a proper turbine size for the hot spot, One thing though, if the Hot Spot requires a 17lb engine for "satisfactory" performance does the BOBCAT require it also?? I see alot of people with Ram 500's on bobcats, How does the 12 lb fly it? Again i dont care about going "over 200" but i do want 150 to 175 and good vertical. Russ

Have a look at the hotspot video clip on this site. This was also posted earlier in the Mig-29 video thread. This hotspot flies with a Ram-500 and cooks along nicely, but just pay attention to the ground roll on takeoff... 13 lb will fly this plane with authority, if you have the right strip and flight conditions...

The Bobcat is a totally different bird. Many are flying with 13lb, yet some also fly with 27lb monsters strapped to them. I don't have one, but I've heard many positive comments. A friend of mine, Dean Wichman (helijet on RCU) has one with a RAM500. I'm sure he'd be willing to give you some feedback if needed.

There are two Bobcats, Standard and XL. The standard Bobcat is designed to use a 11-12 lb engine while the Bobcat XL is designed around the 15-17 lb thrust engines. Thus you will see Bobcats flying both the 12 lb and 17+ lb engines. The standard on e is designed for training and "home field" use while the XL is designed for all out aerobatics.

Oh. I never realized there were two different bobcats, just assumed that you could power it the way you wanted to. So the concensus i am getting is the 12 lb will FLY the Hot Spot but the 17 lb will fly it MUCH better. Guess i will get the 17 lb. russ
