Maybe it was on something like the small SM F-16...they have that aft mounted engine that wouldnt need a long pipe. That being said, I cant imagine it saving hundreds of dollars.

What cracks me up are the guys in this hobby try'n to save a buck. It's a novel idea to create your own parts with household items. Everyone wouldn't mind saving a buck or two. I'm not saying you have to spend an arm and a leg for your parts but just seems like you would get the right part for the job so you can have hassle free flights at the field. I would like to see some pics of this "Canned Pipe" .

Philo, for what it is worth, the beginnings of the turbine community were all built around homemade stuff.
I have seen a turbine with a wooden compressor run on propane with a coffee can as the can. It put out 7 lbs of thrust and cost about $200.00 US in parts.
It had an on board oil pump to put oil to the bearings.
There are many ways of making your own stuff to keep costs down, and tinker with other building aspects of the hobby while you do.
Whether it is safe or not, is outlined by the builder, and not governed by RCU or its participants (thankfully)

I wasn't really talking about saftey. Not much would happen to spectators if your tailpipe failed. I'm just talking about having everything work so that you can have a good day of flying with no hassels. Look there are many things that can go wrong with these models. Why not limit the potential problems by at least 1. The early days of model turbine flight were primative by todays standards, but as all other aspects of the hobby progress, ie electronics, composites, turbines, servos, li-po's etc. , why degress with the pipe. But hey , I'm not knocking it just voicing my opinion. I wish Flyticoun the best of luck with his pipe.

Could you provide the specifications for the can, I'm confused I bought some canned peas but I'm not sure if the canned corn would work better and then the canned beans threw me right off . Also, should I buy name brand or will the store branded cans work? ie.- Do you know if the can strength or heat resistance is the same between the name brand and the generic? Thanks.

I used a refried beans can in the aft end of my pipe and got an afterburner. [X(]
No seriously, I would like to see some pics of FLYTICOUN's idea. My guess is he used large cans for the outside pipe and small cans for the inner pipe....is this correct? If it works and holds up to the temps, I must admit it is a pretty novel idea. Post some pics please!

I never heard of a double walled veggie can, maybe y'all chased him off with the stabs. I just hope he removes the lable before taking it to the field or those jabs will be even worse.

When I was about 13 yrs old, I tried to build a turbine out of a coffee can. The only tools I had were a screwdriver, hammer, pliers and some scissors (for cutting the blades).
It burned real good

I tried this, I used Coca Cola tins for lightness, but they left a melted mess on the grass. What brand of beans are you using & where do i get the double skinned stainless variety of can ?

while the rest of us learn something to do or not to do. Enjoy.................
