See if you can get a hold of a BVM Maverick, they are great starters, they fly excellent and are very very forgiving.

I had a Regal Eagle in 1990-with a Byron fan-Rossi.81-13lbs-flew really well-top speed 125-130mph-lands around 25mph-but I had flaps on mine too.I would scratch build me oneagain if I can find the time-they are so easy to build -just a box with rounded corners-you could build one for $100 or less.

Another winner believe it or not and it build really fast and the $$$ Is very very reasonable is the Yellow Aircraft Starfire.
F-15's of course are always the most friendly flyers in the Jet arena.

you might look at JHH for a first DF
www.jethangar.com
Their new ARF Hawk is perfect for a first DF. Sabre is a good one too.
