Wow, it's a two seat Saab JAS-35 Drakken. Never seen one with two seats. Cool. Where is that airport? Ken

Hi Gary.

I used to look at those Drakens when I was a kid back here in Denmark. The AC in question is actually an old Draken from the Danish Airforce. In 1982 I spent one week with the firebrigade at FSN Karup/Denmark and got to look at those Drakens take off and land all day. They used the brake shutes upon landings, and one of the things we had to do, was to pick them up from the runway after they dropped them. A lot of excitement for at 16-year old[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

Ya, that would be a thrill for a 16 yr old. It would still be neat to see them taking off and landing with the chutes today. Funny that they have made their way over here.

They use them for Test Pilot school (somewhere in the dessert). Saw the documentary last night on PBS (Warplanes). And yes, there were like 3~4 of them at that facility (which looked like Palmdale).

The Saab Draken are used at the Test Pilot School located at the Mojave Airport, in California. I was fortunate enough to be given a tour at the facilty last year. It was very impressive. They have many different types of aircraft at the facility, single engine props (all Types) to the supersonic Drakens. The Draken is actually quite small ( to me) and I dont' think I could fit in it very comfortably. Also,I was looking over a old Mirage at an airport in France (Nantes) and I couldn't believe how small the cockpit was. Anyways, if you could get out to The Mojave Airport, it is quite interesting!
Regards,

Ron

I saw that red colored MiG 21 at Mojave in about 1993, when it was sitting on sawhorses and old tires, totally disassembled, and in natural aluminum finish. Glad to see that it is finally back in one piece. As I recall, there was an F-104 that was in about the same state of disassembly.
We had a offsite assembly facility right next door to FSI through the 80's and into the very early 90's.

It is Saab 35 Draken but definitely not JAS.
... if it is Danish, it is probably a TF 35...

Mojave is a pretty wonderful place and also Fox field. I am fortunate enough to have worked at both in the last couple of years. Eye candy everywhere. !~). Last cool thing I saw was a Fouga Magister at Fox, not to mention the beach 18 I painted there made my day!. You guys that work all the time in these places are lucky dawgs!

Gary, are you interested in building a Saab Draken? I'd like to see one in an AUW of 18lbs for our 54 class engines.

My bad on the type designation on the Drakken, thanks for the correction Perttime.

I haven't driven by Mojave in a while. Is the tarmac still littered with dozens of unused commercial jets?

Last time a drove by there was a two seat Mig 15 flying around in the traffic pattern. Always something cool going on over there.

You still need to work on your spelling of "Draken" ...
