I am building a Mig 15 and are putting together the kevlar tanks system (one main and two saddle tanks), however apart from the tank instructions regarding plumbing and assembly there is no information regarding how to fit the tanks in the plane!

I have studied the manual and it referes to an 'engine specific' instruction, unfortunately not supplied with this kit or the tanks or the tailpipe - can anyone help?

Hey Marc, aren't the positions of the tanks shown on the plans? Been a while since I built mine. The saddle tanks sit under the bypass and the main tank sits in the belly forward of the main saddle tanks.

That's what the plans show, but the question is how should they be fitted - straps, home made formers, aeropoxy to fuselage, mounting brackets aeropoxied to tanks..... ???

These are crutial elements and the instructions are a little vague is this respect.

The two main tanks virtually lock between the fuselage formers and the by-pass shroud. They really don't need anything else holding them in place. The header tank is also in so tight under the ducts that it can't move either. If you think the header tank is going anywhere use some Zap-A-Dap-a-Goo to glue it in place.

DO not glue them in. Use velcro to hold in place...easier to remove for future service....

As said above, use Zap-a-dap-a-goo or a spot of rtv. Velcro will work as well I suppose, but I can't remember how much hieght you have to play with, the velcro may sit them up to high.

A little clear silicon can keep them from moving around... They really can't go very far!

I used small squares of velcro on the tanks on my Mig 15 to hold them in place, I did not want their weight to put any stress on surrounding structures. I prefer to have everything easily removable. A few drops of RTV will of course be the easiest and quickest solution.

Guys, I guess the best thing here to do is see what clearance I am left with and then use silicone or velco depending on the outcome - does that seem logical?

Whilst on the questions, scale retracts -

I received the retracts late last week and wanted to check a couple of things. Firstly, one leg has more movement than the other, and the one with the shorter travel is considerably stiffer (as you would expect) now correct me if I am wrong but are these items not meant to be factory (BVM) set? If so not good at all.

Secondly I read somewhere that the main legs needed a stronger spring rate to stop bounce, and an oil filled version was suggested, does this ring any bells?

Be careful where you use velcro on kerosene tanks. I am not sure about kevlar tanks but over a period of time the oils from kerosene will migrate through plastic tanks such as a UAT tank and make the adhesive soft on the velcro. The adhesive becomes a gooey mess so, like John, I use Zap a Dap a Goo. It only takes a drop to hold the tanks in place and it is still very easy to remove...Gary
