Didn't we just see a thread recently where another jet was lost due to a start-up fire, and the guy's only "extinguisher" was a small bottle of drinking water ?

Our engines have become so reliable nowadays that I've seen several people take them for granted and get ready to start up without an extinguisher in sight, until I go fetch one from my truck and shove it right under their noses. That kind of complacency has no place in this hobby IMO.

No excuse for not having a fire extinguisher near by!!!! A very expensive lesson learned I hope. Our models are not nearly reliable enough to trust them to that point.

i don't see where the lesson was learned, in the second pic the fire is still burning and rather then attempting to put it out by any means, they simply took pics.......... an old saying my grandmother used to say was 'you can't fix stupid, just have to bury it and hope it doesn't grow'

Well, if he didn't have an extinguisher, what was he supposed to do? Fan it out with his shirt , spit or pee on it? No reason for calling him stupid, he just took a chance and lost. He lost a model with NO hope of repair and all the electronics. I'll bet that he did learn a lesson...an expensive one. My condolences to you 339tricolore.

Yea, I agree. I used to be a bit cavalier about starting the engine on my Kangaroo because it was so open, but with an enclosed turbine, I NEVER start it without the fire extinguisher right there beside the plane. Even a small fire in that situation can cause major repairs if you don't get it out VERY quickly. I also carry an Indian firepump in my trailer for a possible grass fire...

Once I found out at the field that I had left my fire extinguisher home.
Well, of course I was pissed, but I didn't fly.
I didn't even start the turbine.
I remember it was a very nice day but the plane stayed in the car.
Today I still have a jets in one piece, and I never forget the fire extinguisher home anymore.

The Mig flies with a P-60 because there were 2 of them in the model.
