Default Smoke system setup in turbine jets

Hello guys,

I would like to equip my CARF Kangaroo with a smoke system. i already have the tank installed in the plane, but havent yet installed the smoke pump \ smoke tubing next to the turbine. i would like recommendations in that area.

First i will state some facts:
1. i installed many smoke pump setups in giants before (gas engines) - its a fairly easy deal.
2. i would like to use a PowerBox smoke pump which i have ready for this project.
3. i have visually seen a couple jets with smoke setups.

With that being said, i would still like to get ideas from you guys about what would be the ultimate installation, especially the part that involves the outlet tubing on the back of the turbine, where \ how to mount \ bend etc ?

Also, we found with the gas engines hat if you pump a lot of oil into the muffler most of it will not burn, and will drop out of the muffler, so a rather slow flow of smoke oil was ideal, is this the same with jets or not ?

pics of your installation would be very helpful.

You can use a SS tube as shown here. Tamjets sells a nice set. you will have to pump a lot of smoke fluid in a turbine craft due to the velocity of the exhaust gases...

the Tam's setup pumps allot more fluid then most systems, get it and install both tubes and expect about 4-6oz per min for decent smoking. on the flow rate, a turbine keeps a consistent EGT regardless of the amount of fluid you pump in, it doesn't cool off like a gasser muff does, you play with the depth into the jet blast you inject in relation to the amount of fluid you pump, to far out and you don't get good smoke because you're not vaporizing all the fluid and to far in and it burns and gives flames out the tail. a turbine also has the advantage of adding more injection nozzles (tubes) into the jet blast where it would cool a gasser muff even further reducing smoke and increasing the mess

Awesome info on the nozzle. I been trying to figure out why during acceleration when the smoke is on it likes to spit flames and burn. Scares the crap out of me. Lol. Do you know from experience what’s the best location and distance from the end of the turbine? Thanks

I was told just recently by one of our local guys that used to sell smoke fluid sometime ago, the two things that will give you a nice colunm of smoke are atomization and quantity.

Good info in this thread! One question: I have the powerbox jet smoke pump with two outgoing hose connections. Do people using that pump typically use two smoke tubes ?

I don't use that box but, I had two tubes on my Boomer, I removed one to spend less fluid per use, I replaced the 50 oz tank it had for a 30 oz tank, the more fluid you spray the whiter the smoke gets.

I have always run a brass tube down between the double wall pipe. Always has worked great for me and you get the scale looking gap from the tail pipe to the smoke. the same that you see on full scale

Here is a vid of my F-15 with an external center line drop tank. The drop tank house's the smoke system. Two Hook ups, The servo lead and a fuel line. I have the tank on slides and slide it back to lock in on. I can remove it if I don't want to use smoke. Now the oil I was using at the time of flight was concrete form release oil. It works but doesn't smoke as well as commercial oils.
