Default Fuel Line Safety Wire???

Can I use light gauge copper wire for fuel line safety wire?

Or should I only be using stainless steel?

Copper will usually break before geting tight enough to do any good. BVM sells a spool of the correct guage stainless. Reasonablely priced and even has BVM on the wood spool..Worth the price, LOL

Terry,

Thanks for the quick reply.
Being new to jets I wasn't sure and knew I'd get a quick and correct answer here.

http://www.chiefaircraft.com/cgi-bin...afetyWire.html ; at $10 a pop, it's cheap enough to buy one spool for the workshop and one for your fieldbox, and the spools are large enough to last a lifetime.

I use .025 for fuel lines, .020 for air lines.

Why not just use .020 for both? Serious question, I am not familiar with it either.

Fuel tube is generally thicker & tougher than airline, so I want more pressure applied to hold it in place. Stronger wire achieves that.

Either is fine, if it is stainless and you are good at safety wire, you could cut the tube with it long before you break it.

Wow, and I thought that little BVM spool was a bargain at $5.00 each.[X(]

I've used a whole roll of BVM and only gone through 1.5 jets and a gasser. Next time I run out, I'm ordering the one pounder from Chief.

I honestly never put the safety wire on my air lines and rarely see it implemented in other jets. It's always a good idea, but I couldn't manage to get a loop of wire tied around such tight areas as the retract and brake fittings.

Just buy some at your local hardware store. I paid $1.09 plus tax for 25 feet of it a few years ago and I still have plenty left; no shipping charges either.

Of course if it's going into a BVM jet then I guess you'll have to pay the extra $ to get the logo on the spool.

Ya gotta pay for that nifty BVM spool!!!!
..........................AND, I hadd to use it on myBrake "Air" Lines on the PST Panther...........Cause they are filled with Hydralic Jack oil, and under master cylinder pressure they will pop off. Also the reason I used a JR 8411 servo on the brakes

You need to use 0.011 annealed SS wire for air lines. The 0.025 or even 0.02 stuff is too thick to be easily wrapped (twice, as it should be) around airlines. The 0.011 stuff is plenty strong enough for air lines. You can get it from small parts:

Since I've been doing this, I've had MANY fewer problems with my air setups...

.2 would hold the solid fuel boosters onto the space shuttle.
