Default Landing Gear Pin for Jet-1A

I had a dead stick landing with my Savex L-39 with Jet-1A gear and it sheared off the landing gear pin. The Pin is 4 mm stainless steel. Will it be ok if I machine one out of 5/32 Drill Rod? Is a 4mm pin pretty much standard?

Thanks in advance

why can't you get some 4mm pins from Mcmaster? I've been using their clevis pins as axles for a long time. I looked under clevis for 4mm, but they did not have it for that. They did however have dowel pins that were 4mm.

Thanks for the replies Sandor & Sean

I was going to get some drill rod from McMasters but I'll look at the 4mm Dowel first.

I can always count on getting a quick response here.

Much appreciated

I Finally got around to making pins for the Jet-1A Landing Gear on my L-39. Thanks to the tip from Sean I ordered 4mm SS Dowel pins in 40mm length. Attached is a series of pictures of the fixture I made to make the pins and the actual process. I think the only critical part of making the pins is that the 2 flats are on opposite sides of the pin and they must be parallel, which is why I designed the fixture.

#1 ā€“ Fixture I made of aluminum. It has a 4mm hole and the pin is held in place with 2 8-32 set screws. Since the dimensions of the pin are not overly critical I simply fasten a dowel pin into the fixture and align the fixture with the edge of the vise on my mini mill. The flats on the original pin were 6mm wide which is .236 in. I used a .250 mill so the flats are just slightly wider.

#2 ā€“ I milled the first flat .3mm deep, 4mm from the edge of the fixture.

#3 ā€“ Flip the fixture, again simply aligning with the edge of the vise and mill the second flat with no change to the X coordinate.

#4 ā€“ Mill 4mm off the end of the dowel pin.

#5 ā€“ Finish milled end in lathe and the pin is ready for installation.

Very little time involved and a simple operation. Even including shipping from McMaster-Carr the pins cost less than $1.00 each, so I have new pins in my L-39 and 8 spares in the box. A day of flying will not be cut short due to a bent or broken Landing Gear Pin. But I must add that the pins on the Jet-1Aā€™s seldom fail and if I made smoother landings Iā€™d never need the spare pins.

Thanks for the comments guys.

It was a fun little project once I figured out how to keep the flats parallel.

Sandor,

I have much appreciation for the work that goes into Jet-1A Retracts & Struts.
I'm happy to say that both of my jets are Jet-1A equipped.

I forgot to attach a picture of the finished pins, so here it is:

I machined mine too for my Savex L39.
Jet1A gear are nice, but I think different material should be used for the pin as they snap too easily...

Yann,
Is it possible they snap easy so something else more important doesn't?

Great minds think alike!

On my Grumania Super Sabre I needed a way to cut the flat to set the correct tow-in of the wheels. Unlike the L-39 the Hun has swept wings requiring the flats to be at an angle to each other.

I first cut the two flats on the end that goes into the strut then, I made a pin holder and so I can easily, and repeatedly cut the
single flat that goes into the trunion block. The correct angle is cut into the tool so I can cut a left and right hand side.
