Jet Legend F/A-22 Raptor build thread

RE: Jet Legend F/A-22 Raptor build thread
Chris, I just called Tam and told him that I wanted a JL F-22 pipe sized for the Titan/Rhino and he had it ready to ship in a few days. He has all the dimensions of the Raptor as he had the prototype bird. The Tam pipe mouth fits around the outside of the bypass instead of inside like the JL pipe mouth. It's got a wonderful full scale growl at Rhino full throttle and I have a lot more confidence to let her rip now.
Please post how the ED Gear Door Manager works out for ya...I want one but want to hear feedback first.
Jeremy, Bill's twin Raptor is still rockin. His top end beats mine although I've got him on takeoff performance and vertical. We had all 3 F-22's up at once in formation last Sunday during the Blues Angels morning warm-up....Bill's, mine and Mike's Christian Diffusion. I think that's a first. But talk about tough keeping orientation though...OMG!!!!
Will post vectored nozzle photos in a few weeks. Aloha, W.

mahalo!
I got an email from Tam to call him tomorrow for the pipe. I won't hesitate on this upgrade, JL's pipe is very nice but I do agree with you that the hot more powerful engines need a TAM pipe.
Tammy, send me a pipe. You have my CC number!

RE: Jet Legend F/A-22 Raptor build thread
May be the wrong place to ask the following - I've been waiting for an F22 jet to hit the market before I get into jets. Whats the verdict on the F22 as a first jet let alone a turbine. I fly IMAC aerobatics(composite arf Yak 100cc), and been at it for 15 yrs or so. Any advice would be great. The F22 is my favorite jet out there, so nothing else has caught my eye. Thanks

It's a *****cat to fly, just don't let it get to draggy on final and you will be fine. As for flight characteristics... well it's a lovely plane to fly, has a very locked on feel to it in the air, it will fly very slow with authority and will also fly very fast. It goes where you point it and it feels like it's on rails. It has a mushy stall and recovers quickly as soon as the nose points below the horizon. It is fun to fly and once you have the landing approaches correct it will land just as slow as a rookie.

Nope,
My only issue is that has not stopped raining here long enough for the grass to dry!!!
Really wish I had a nice tart strip to fly off.
They fly nice. One of my flying buddies is just starting on one.

Mugen, it's a really, really tough bird and with over 60 flights on mine there literally are zero issues...except maybe that the cost of Jet-A keeps going up and I don't get to fly her every weekend.
I broke in the JetCat Titan SE in mine and another club member's maiden today and can't say enough great things about the performance of that engine in this plane. Perfect combo. The SE's spool up time has to be seen to be believed.
Looking forward to see Chris's build progress. Aloha, Woody.

That's great to here!!!! May I ask what kind of servos you guys are using on the rudders? I have heard some bad things about the F-22 rudders but I think that it may be do to the fact that the control surfaces goes all the way to the edge of the flight surface and you just need to use really strong servos to conteract all of the force exerted on them??? or maybe the JL is just a better designed plane? Anyway thanks in advance for the input guys.

I locked my rudders, don't need them. My friends model has 4 hinges down the rudder instead of three like earlier models. Not sure if he is going to use his.

Ok, everything is done except for paint, cockpit and position light covers….Next year, I plan on painting it along with the thrust vectoring development.
Final weight is 27.232 lbs dry (I have a very accurate digital scale); this includes the lighting system, servo expander, 4 batteries (1 lith –Turbine, 2 NMh – RX, 1 NMh –lights) BVM hopper (full), and 2 additional 8 oz D/F tanks.
CG: 180 mm aft the leading edge root
Controls: Aileron- 20mm, Elevator- 55mm, Flap- 20mm, Rudder- whatever you can get
I also mixed in Elevons at 35%.
Power: is the Titan SE
Pipe: Tam’s F/A-22 pipe (Jetlegend)
This is the part that’s going to kill me, I’ll have to wait until the weather improves for first flight. …..April or May??
This is an awesome looking bird and will be a blast to fly, I can hardly wait.
Thanks to all I emailed for questions and help, especially Woody in Hawaii!
Here’ a couple of links to some video of the lights and the gear retraction of the JL F/A-22.
Enjoy!

RE: Jet Legend F/A-22 Raptor build thread
My buddy and I have flown the prototype F-22. The one which had the rudders blown off first from flutter. []
Other than being that "dissappear in the sky" camo it flew very well. As this friend of mine tools and tools and tools around until just before the sun sets, (all of my landings on that darn raptor have been after sunset...) I've yet to fly it in the daylight. Let me just say that the camo works really well.
For some unknown reason, he doesn't use flaps. I've read that they "supposedly" blank out the elevators, but I'm a huge believer(and respecter! Hey was that a Bushism? ) in flaps. Flaps slow these darn airplanes down and keep you from building up too much speed when deployed.
HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY TRIED FLAPS IN THIS THING? [sm=72_72.gif]
Since the raptor that I've flown, and landed, is not mine, I haven't pushed the flap issue because he also "heard" things....

Looks great Chris.
See you in Syracuse.....I guess your 22 and my Panther will be competing for that first place trophy

there's a trophy?
Looking forward to seeing the New York gang in a couple of weeks.
Dave, I bought the lights from Electrodynamics. The Raptor has 2 green position lights and 2 white strobes (right wing), top and bottom tip. The same on the left wing, except for red position/white strobes. There are 2 landing lights but I only have 1 installed, the full scale uses one for taxi. The Landing light is activated "on" when the gear is down and "off" when the gear is up. Really slick, you can see it in the vid I posted.
Thanks,
Chris

Here's some more angles.

Serious. When time permitted. I'll design one that doesn't cause too much power lost.

Hey Tam,
you are the pipe master!

Good thing I had one kit version in stock. I did take a look and scratching my head how to built one.
The main problem is the elevator bulkhead. In order to do scale vector thrust. That bulkhead had to be modify.
So this go to be hard for guys already had the bulkhead glue from the factory.
Let me see what I can come up with. No time frame when is available.

RE: Jet Legend F/A-22 Raptor build thread
Hi,
I have one with rudders that didn't flutter - 4kg JR mini's with a short arm and solid linkage...
I have used flaps on mine, now set at 26mm full throw with absolutely no vices and no elevator blanking on landing either.
I'm going to gradually increase the amount of flap to see if the already very slow landing can be made slower...
Cheers
Jeff

I'm currently on a business trip near Langley AFB and just watched 2 F/A-22's fly over my hotel. This is the first time I've seen deployed Raptors on patrol, an awe inspiring site!.
The last time I saw the Raptor was 4 years ago at Nellis AFB (Las Vegas), where they were still going through IOT@E (Initial Operational Test and Evaluation). At Nellis, the Raptors would always blow by their F-16 chase planes on takeoff. The pilots love the 22.
