Default Skymaster BAE Hawk

Hi all, I'm scare because I asked my first jet, I'm buying a Skymaster BAE Hawk to JetRC, I hope to paint and intalling all in my plane (twin scare), I'm flying till 1987 and I'm not a expert but fly well (almost all time, no when I fly my crazy Sig Wonder).
I will install my Spektrum DX7 and JF-100 Falcon, I'll post a lot of pic.

Regards

Tilaco:

So at last the jet bug bit you. As you know I am also building a SM Hawk. If you need any help, don´t hesitate and ask.

Michel, if you keep this up, every saturday there are going to be more jets than prop airplanes.

Regards
Eduardo

PS: Tilaco, antes de volarlo tienes que espantar la jeta de las Wonders. Un jet a la semana, simplemente no califica.

Eduardo, less Wonder than real models.
I need to fly model with wheels !!!
I love the Wonders,is a plane too funny and cheap, you know I can build it in a week and the last 6 month I only flew a lot of Wonders and creshed a lot too. I will leave this planes for a while and enjoy the fly "real planes"
Michel has been a great friend, always answer all my phone call and mail, he share all your knowledge and give to me all posibilities and prices.

Hi Guys,

I am looking at purchasing a new SM Hawk for a P120SE and wonder if you can assist with some photos and feedback.

1. What is the new undercarriage like, it looks much more scale and better constructed than the previous versions (some photos please)

2. I am assuming the models you are building are the new ARF plus versions, how is the scale outline, it looks much improved?

3. I have heard some stories about severe pitch down on application of flaps for landing, is this just people putting the flaps down at too high a speed or something that needs careful trimming and setup?

4. Would like to see your progress in setup and flying, pls post some details !

regds,

Dale

Dale

I own and fly the "old" version and will comment on the "pitch-down" tendency when using flap.

Recently whilst flying my Hawk at Temora Jets I experienced this problem for the first time. It was very scary! Thankfully I was high enough and had time to retract full flap, before recovering to land safely on first position flap.

Basically the Hawk (mine is 13.5kg without fuel) is a floater and will land very easily. It is also deceptively fast, so deploying the flaps too early are easy. I've had many flights with mine up to that point and have always paid attention to the speed - but I got caught. I think the main problem was flying together with a lot of other jets and having to stay in the "pattern".

My advice, be on your toes, don't deploy full flaps to early.

That all having been said, it's a wonderful model.

Cheers mate,

Springbok Flyer

Thanks for your coment Springbok, I'm scared for this "pitch-down", Do you feel this model is good enough for the jet beginer?, we have a medium long fied and the jets in my club always land on the limits, I don't think land with out flap.
Tha Hawk is the prettyest Skymasters models, and I don't like to buy other jet, it look like a good jet trainer but I don't like to fly a plane with bad tendency.

Mate

I don't know how experienced you are as a RC pilot. Seems Michel knows you. If you have a few years under your belt on various scale models, using flaps and retracts you should be OK. Having said that I would rather go with a sport jet first and at least get use to the turbine before you fly a scale jet like the Hawk.

Good luck

As Michel said, don't be scare. The pitch down tendency it was also in the real Hawk. So all hawk models copy the same habbit. Some can be cured some not. Is only nowing your model and you'll be ok.

Hello All

I recently put together a Old version Skymaster Hawk, on the first few flight we noticed the same pitch down issue with the flaps down. After opening the back area we found that the double pushrods with ball links were bent.

In the stock location the servos for the Old Hawk pushed on the elevator to give up. Under compression the pushrods normally do not perform as well as under tension. To fix this issue I moved the elevator servos behind the elevator pivot above the tail pipe, now the pushrods are under tension when pulling up, and the whole linkage and servos perform much better now, and although I’m careful not to put down flaps too fast, there is no tendency to pitch down what so ever. I’m using about 45 degrees of flaps on final.

If you look at the pivot of the Old version hawk and all the elevator area behind it, It does not take much force acting on the back tips of the stabs to create a huge amount of force for the servo and linkage to overcome. Although this fact does not change with the linkage under tension vs compression, the servos and linkage can handle much more force if under tension with out getting mushy, or bending.

The flaps are causing a strong downwash component when deployed, this puts a force on the stabs that trys to weathervane them into a "down elevator" condition, resulting in pitch down. We had some oil on the side of the hawk during one flight and the streamlines down the fuselage flowed down under the stab and above the wing at quite a surprising angle.

Now with dual elevator servos 8611a's on a matchbox with separate power I have positive elevator response for the whole flight envelope.

For the new ARF + version of the Hawk has a completely different setup and already has the pushrods under tension.

Aloha Duke
