Hey everybody, how's your experience with the SM pistons?
I'm finally getting around to installing the air system and I m considering what to do.
Is it worth it to try and pressure test these, eventually replacing o-ring? Or is it just a waste of time?
What is everybody using in theirs?
Thanks

I pulled mine, water tested them all, and fixed a few that leaked. Reinstalled and still had leaks, so I replaced all of them except the canopy and speed brakes with ultra precision. The speed brake still leak some but they are never used and not part of the gear or doors so I haven’t bothered to change them. Save yourself the heart ache.

I took some time today to try and fix them. The bigger ones look like they can sorta be reliable, but the smaller ones are not designed well. The head where the shaft comes out doesn't seem like it can possibly seal well as the o-ring seat is too small and is just slides away.
I'll look into the UP cylinders. Are these good?

My SM F-14 should be arriving in about 4 weeks (ordered in Jet Power last September). Should i check/replace all small air cylinders?

Yes you should.

They can be made to work but at least check for tightness and for leaks.

Does the F14 fly poorly with wings swept? In all the videos I've seen of the jet it seems nobody does much with these wings swept back. A pass with maybe a roll and then sweep them out again. Not that I'll probably ever have one but the F14 is my favorite jet and the wings swept back is a huge draw for me.

They fly fine with wings swept. The Aileron is more sensitive but just have rate for that when sweep is done. The one thing I found was that the model visibility is down making it harder to see in swept configuration. Of course paint scheme will effect this!!!!!!

Really nice !!

Truly inspiring, I'm going to start on my F-14 some year.

Nice to know these things fly nice with light weight fast responding turbines.

How did you get it below 25kg with full function wings?
mine is 28kg DRY, with two G-Boosters 130+ turbines...… and it takes on 8 litres of fuel……. I'd like mine to lose some weight, flies fine like that, but on landing the extra weight does come into play………

I installed Kingtech 85 without thrust tube, made all wires new and light weight, fuelbag from fuelbag.de, EVERYTHING is installed under the nose cone and just behind it, small servos for slats, rudders and spoilers and only 3 litres fuel :-((( That lasts for 4 minutes from gear up to gear down. After 3 flights I'll adjust the gyro (cortex pro) on the next flights and reduce the throws when the wings are swept back.
The kit was standard manufactured and is much too strong for the F-14 light I made. But I think, I'm the only one. If we don't have the 25 kg limit in Germany, I surely had installed 140 or 160 engines.

Nice work Karl. What are those fuel bags like? Do they save much weight? What is their long term reliability like? Do you just run your fuel line from the bag straight into the pump then turbine with no filter?

Thanks mate

Default Fuelbag

Hello Levi,

the fuelbag is made of four layers of plastic film and weighs only 120grams inclusive inner filter +two carbon tubes for installing. Another filter is no nessecary. In my models the fuelbag is located at the CG and the 6 mm Festo tube goes directly to the in the nose cone (more than 1 metre). In the german homepage they say, that a customer (or test pilot) had more than 1000!!! flights with any problems. I like „bubbles“, because of the low weight an easy installation, it‘s absolutely clean, doesn‘t smell and a hopper tank isn‘t needed. I hope you understand my english 🙈

Best Regards

Karl-Andreas

Loud and clear Karl-Andreas. Thank you for the information mate. Looks like a great product, one that I’ll consider in the future.

Cheers

So at 3:45 there’s a big gray Cat in the clouds!
Awesome F-14, I like the subtle weathering that’s not overdone.
My favorite scheme too!

Any thoughts or experience on how a twin 140 setup would handle in an engine out scenario? Ability to maintain level flight around the pattern for a single engine landing?

how about the can diameter of the turbine in terms of the installation? I’m also considering twin 190’s that are each 110mm width.
