Default servo strength

what do you guys do to determine the strength servo you need for your airplane? Is there like an equation you can give me so I can figure it out?

do you think that 168 in/oz mg servo will do on a 28lbs airplane, its going on the xtreme jets rafale or tamjets rafale. Is this enough or do I need more?

Have you asked TamJets or Xtreme Jets what they recommend?

Suggestion would be to go with digital Hitec 5955 or JR 8711 on the elevons.

Hello,

I use this program.

http://members.cox.net/evdesign/page...ge_design.html

It takes into account the actual linkage geometry (control horn length/ocation, servo arm geometry, etc) which is just as important in the calculation as the servo torque specs. You can have a giant servo and poor geometry and you are no better off (or even worse off) than if you had good geometry with a more modest servo.

I have helped others with set ups using this program so I am pretty familiar with it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Yes that would be fine for the elevons, I have used JR 8411, hitech 5985 (144oz) and hitech 5955 (300oz). there was no difference in flight control when switching from each of these servos. the JR 8611 and 8711 servos will not fit in the wing without custom servo bay covers and modifying the wood mounts. these servos are to wide. Currently I am using the 5955 titanium gear servos and the Extreme jets Rafale is powered by a jet central super eagle.

I had to reverse by hatch covers with the raised portion facing the trailing edge of the wing and I used BVM's L brackets to attach the servos. the supplied mounts where to thick and I also used counter sunk screws.
