Treadstone,

You are correct, I stock all replacement parts for Wren here in the USA, and Sara is only a phone call away.....

Then I said that I had a Merlin with aftermarket parts. Is it still a Merlin? ....
Just a clarification, YES, it is still a Merlin, all the parts that you have in your engine are made in same place by same guys and by same standards...

Ya Gaspar, I knew that walking into the deal. I sure appreciate this engine I have of yours. I will say, over the years, and all the places I have flown it, it has needed small adjustments that I did not know how to make, however, Phillipe was kind enough to take his time at Florida Jets and really teach me what it takes to make your engine sweet on any given day or temperature. It is simply wonderful. Now that I can properly program your ecu.

I'm not sure about this guy above, but anyone would be lucky to have this engine. It is magnificent!

...In the mean time, I invested over a hundred grand in this area of the hobby, buying different types of aircraft, equipment, tools, and devices. There are not many out there that I have not owned at one time or another, or currently own.

...On top of acquiring all this, I spent thousands of hours working with them, seening how they work, what their shortcomings were.

..The list of friends I have in the top echelon of of this hobby is long. Personal Cell phone of my engine manufacturer, friendship with my engine wholesaler, personal friend of Dreamworks (we talk about business decisions from time to time that affect you, and others). Friend of my district Pres to the AMA, friend of Eric Clapp, in fact, he has a problem right now, that I am going to solve for him. As far as I know, I'm the only person he would turn to no this type of issue.

..My point is, I must not be all that bad a guy, I suspect that these friendships were built because of the contrary. I will say, most of my friends in this hobby sure wish I would not post on RCU. Apparently it gives me bad press. But alas, most have forgiven me, cause they know if they are ever in a jam, there are basically no limits to what I will do to help.

I have built airplanes for many newbies, test flew them, helped them get all their support equipment, and in some cases I have paid for that out of my pocket.

If so then it is a moot point to make. No one was talking about putting in parts that are made in the same place by the same guys. I believe the subject was people putting in parts made from somewhere else. That is why I said that I was "figuratively" speaking. I wasn't trying to pin it down to a particular manufacturer. I should have prefaced my comments with that but I thought most people (and most did) understood what everyone was talking about at the time. Hence - the lack of communication.

Not feeling like one today, spent the last two hours looking for something I've misplaced, probably the first person in history to do this )

And you know how it goes, you're looking for this widget, you find this other widget, which reminds you to do this, then this, then this.

One thing after another and my day is blown, and all I have to show for it is a couple of aluminum engine mounts I made this morning.

Oh well, in a few days I'll be out flying at a Warbird Rally, some R&R for sure! Weather permitting, of course, looks like rain!

That's exactly why I never buy just ONE of any tool, widget etc … if you buy them by the dozen, then you have to systematically lose all dozen before you are hosed. [)]

A pilot in the UK recently purchased a model with a Mk 2 Wren 54 installed. After only a few flights the turbine wheel shed a blade in flight. The engine was sent to Wren for repair.
On external inspection the engine appeared to be a Wren Mk 2 from approx 2003, which had subsequently had a Mk 3 compressor and tailcone fitted. On opening the engine, however, we had a shock. ALL the internals were JetJoe parts. One of the turbine blades had a crystalline fracture - a casting defect - and had come off. This imbalance had caused immediate bearing failure and done a lot of other damage.
The pilot was very lucky that the failure didn't cause the loss of the model.

We are appalled at this. We believe there was a deliberate intention to deceive - if someone had unknowingly put an engine together from Wren and JJ parts then one would expect to see a mixture of both internals and externals. But all Wren on the outside, all JJ on the inside seems beyond co-incidence.

We ask everyone buying on the second-hand market to be careful. The JetJoe is a copy of the Wren Mk 2 kit - the guy in China bought one and copied it. The parts are to some extent interchangeable, but the Chinese ones are made of inferior materials and the turbine wheels are not cast to aerospace standards, as ours are. When buying a secondhand engine, check that the turbine wheel has "Wren" on it. There are some genuine Wren wheels out there without our name on, but not many. If in doubt, send the engine to us and we will tell you what it is. Don't get your engines serviced by anyone except ourselves, please. Our rates are reasonable and we warranty our work.

I'm sure I don't need to spell out the implications for Wren in this. On Sunday, our name could have been dragged though the mud because of this failure. Please help us to root out these copies because if one fails and injures someone it is our reputation and ultimately our business at stake.
