RE: HEADS UP THE S.D. FAA JUST SHUT ME DOWN
the airport manager and the city government of vermillion had a meeting with the faa today. the just of it was that un-maned airplanes have no business at a full scale airports in there region. bunch of bull sheet if you ask me. the city government was even fighting the faa on my behalf, but no give. the faa told the city government that they would pull all federal funding for the airport if they had this event at there or any regional n.d., s.d. airport.

Actually it's because there have been numerous times where RC Pilots fail to adhere to the Flight restrictions.
I have personally witnessed several instances of Flying over 1000 feet in and around an airport. Exceeding the 200mph barrier in place in the pattern.
Not staying clear of Full size traffic.
Perhaps we need to Police ourselves better then we are.

Sounds like the "Auto NO" button was activated. Typical fed response. Maybe if you pull your shoes off ,strip search all the old ladies in walkers and young moms with babies in strollers they will let you. Oh yeah, dont forget..put all your fuel in 3oz bottles and place it in a 1 qt baggie.

I can see this being a problem somewhere around here (the Bay Area) or other high traffic places, but come on, this is South Dakota we are talking about!!!!
The FED's have nothing better to do than pick on people and their little toys, pretty sad.[&o]

Flyjets,
Unless you contact the airport operator, you are only allowed to fly upto 400 ft w/in 3 miles of an airport.

Did you personally bring out your radar and see the airplanes going over 200 mph or did the South Dakota "airport operator" do it?

RE: HEADS UP THE S.D. FAA JUST SHUT ME DOWN
the problem was started several years ago. a airport in s.d. closed there airport to hold drag races on the runway. from what i was told they did several thousand dollars of damage to the runway, taxiway, etc... it left a bitter, bitter taste in the faa's mouth. now they won't have anything to do anything unless it's avaition related. model aircraft is not avaition related according to the faa..

I also would like to see the WHOLE story unfold. It obviously looks like there was a problem in the past and the FAA doesn't want to deal with it in the future.
Bummer for sure.

Does this airport have a single runway, or multiple runways?

I thought a few years ago, the FAA decided it would not allow events like these at federally funded airports, if atleast one runway couldn't stay open during the event. I could be wrong though.

Wasn't this the problem that caused superman to shut down in Ill, and was not there a similar problem with an planned event in Mo.

RE: HEADS UP THE S.D. FAA JUST SHUT ME DOWN
VERY INTERESTING.................I've seen and had this problem before. The small field that I fly at in Pocatello, Idaho is with-in our airport property, but outside the secuity fence as mandated by the FAA. I'm the only Jet Jock in the area and when I began flying "fast" about 5 years ago the airport manager had some major concerns about my potential "missle". Following lengthy discussions with both the airport manager and the tower director I invited them to our field one morning to watch a flight. Surprizingly, they made the appearance, took note of my fire equipment, procedure, my callers expertise, and discussed my Naval Aviation experience. End of problem..........It was all about communication and safe flying. Interestingly, the last two years I've been asked to fly at the annual airport airshow.............they really like the smoke. I hope, and wish you the best of luck in finding a home for your upcoming Rally. When it is over, start the communication process, which is actually a process of education. Once again, GOOD LUCK.
