Hi everyone,

Is there anyone who can send me a copy of the Skymaster Jas 39 Gripen Instruction Manual?. The link in Skymaster website is not working for some reason..Or is there anyone who can suggest me a reliable build thread?

Thanks a lot

Guys,

I wouldn't get too excited about the SM manual. I have a copy and it's about a dozen pages long and consists of photos and very brief descriptions (written in Chin-English). It provides direction like "install the 3 pcs fuel tanks", "connect nose cone to fuselage by 6 screws ", "make the holes for install the Landing gear". The most verbose instructions emphsize the need to make sure the fin and servos are securely mounted or else your plane may be seriously damaged! Unless you have the experience of building at least one jet (and thus you need a manual) this isn't the plane for you.

I'm building the SM Gripen now; it's a great looking plane and I'm quite excited about the build. OK, the manual isn't the greatest, but I knew that before I ordered it.

If there is any interest, I'd be happy to do a build thread. Let me know.

Hi Jim,
Doing the build thread on the Gripen would be a great idea!
as I'm pretty close to buying one my self-
With not having to much building experience , any help would be gratefully appreciated-

Cheers

It really is a beautiful plane and if it flies as good as it looks, I'm sure you'll be happy with it. There are far too many F-15, F-16, & F-18 models flying around; we need to buy more MB-339's, Gripens, F-5/F-20s, etc just for diversity at jet meets. For some reason, SM doesn't sell many Gripens (I don't think that it is in their standard ad anymore) but maybe a build thread will help change that.

This is my first SM plane; unfortunately it was damaged during shipping but SM was really great about it and are sending me a replacement.

Regards,

Jim

Looks like we need a Gripen owners thread.
Only had one flight on mine as the weather was below average but did some aero's and got certified.
Running hitec servo's, spektrum gear, and a jetcat P-120SE.
Found the install the hardest as I was trying to keep everything forward and it got a little tight up there in the cockpit.

Retracts were also leaking so had to fly with them down. Hopefully that is why is rocked a little in roll during the flight.

Mine is the older heavy aircraft weights 10Kg with no fuel.
I used a lot of canard to get it off the ground but I think that is why mine flew nicely off the runway instead of leaping off.

I am interested in using the canards as landing flaps like they do on the rookie 2, but a little worried about trying it because they are so large. Has any one tried this??

I have just started assembling an older JL Grippen.
Am thinking of using an Artes JF-100 Falcon or a JetCat P120.

An suggestions on engine choice would be appreciated.
Thanks

growingupisoptional

What are the control throws you used on the canards and elevons for takeoff and flight ??
You seem to have the settings right as yours seemed to fly "nicely off the runway instead of leaping off".

Thanks

I was toying with the idea of doing a build thread on the SM Gripen. There seem to be a few Gripen owners around, a few builders, and a couple of people considering getting the kit, so I'll get on with it.

Jim

LeeLevinson, I've just got back from work so off to bed for me but I will measure my throws and report back.
Having said that my throws seem to be hugely different from most peoples. I have nearly as much elevator as I can get.
I am using 25% expo as that is a standard figure I fly with all aircraft.

I think the canard is what makes it fly off the ground better. Instead of trying to lift the aircraft from the rear with loads of airspeed the canards lifted the nose first.
I'm pretty sure this is what canards are supposed to do and considering my C of G is massively forward at 110mm is left the ground easily. I have some video somewhere and will put it on youtube. I also watched the fullsize vids on youtube and they use a lot of canard for short takeoffs.

I went the P120 because the aircraft with that engine ready to go weights 22lb add 6lb of fuel and you have 28lbs, which is exactly how much the P120 puts out.
one to one power to weight ratio is nice.

Rcjets 63, a gripen build would be good. They are a cheap airframe for a scale aircraft and when I've done some more flying to compare to a eurosport I can tell people whether I would recommend them for a 2nd aircraft or a first if they can already fly. So far it is looking good.
The other problem I had was finding the setting for throws in here, even though it's in a number of threads it was very hard to find.

I started writing an Owners/Builders thread last night but had a computer glitch and lost the work. I'll give it another try today.

There is a fair amount of info out there on this model, but growingupisoptional is quite right that it is spread out across several threads and hard to find. With some luck, we can get it all into the new Owners/Builder's thread.

Jim

Boy RCjets63 you don't muck around. ;-)
If someone has the copy of the SM manual I think we should embed it in the new thread, even though it is not brilliant it give complete novice builders like myself something to start on. Then I had to ask around for build photo's from other people and it took quite a while.

Another topic is the manufacture of more fuel tanks for the rear of the aircraft, someone I was emailing was doing this as well.
I want to fill the new thread with quality information and good photo's as it will make it so much easier for the next people to buy a gripen.
I think it would also be an excellent idea to link all the video's we can find on the gripens as well. I found a really good one showing how strong the RC gripen is when one gets smacked into the ground with undercarriage up. What a shocking sound. LOL

Should be a good thread. will move over to that one for next post.
