U-2 Maiden
Hello All
Congrats Inav "Mike" on your maiden of your U-2C
Here are some photo's of the Maiden. Tim was the pilot and the Hawaii crew assisted.
Power P-80 Im not sure of the vitals, I hope Inav can fill the rest in.
Plane flew great, was some fun trying to land it though the thing just wanted to stay airborne. Surprisingly fast at half throttle.

RE: U-2 Maiden
Hi Mike D
I think that it is a German Kit. It was a long build but I'll let Inav tell the tail, he can also tell you which mfg. Tks my Wife Jill our picture Lady went to the store so I had to take the pics this time. Not as nice as hers but I did ok.
Our resident camera guy Chris was just busting one wanting to put a camera in the plane.

RE: U-2 Maiden
Thanks all,
The build thread is below:
[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3416771/anchors_3416771/mpage_1/key_kranz%252Cu%252D2/anchor/tm.htm#3416771]U-2 build[/link]
It's a Kranz kit from Germany. Span is just under 13 feet, P-80 with 80oz of fuel. Flew for about nine minutes with a few onces left in the mains at 35% throttle at cruise. Needless to say running out of fuel in this airplane isn't as critical as say, a F-104 I have not weighed it yet but would guess the weight to be around 26 LBS wet.
Some issues before next flight are:
-We set the CG to specs, but it's still very tail heavy. Tim did a great job getting her down safe despite the pitch oscillations
-Huge flaps cause excessive pitch-down mixing will fix
-Wing pogos keep falling off on taxi/takeoff
- Needs a rudder gyro in windy conditions
- Speed brakes are either blowing in or the engine is sucking them shut
- Boy, is it hard to see from the side!
I'll post the video tonight.

Paul,
I saw you an Butch fly yours at SWFF. You we're my inspiration! I tried to find a kit of the S-model, but had to settle for an earlier version. I didn't have Sam Syder's building skill or patience to do a wooden model. Any flying tips appriciated.

Hey Guys,
Mike,
I just finished the vid. with some sound effects and stuff . I just need to put it onto a DVD.....and my dad's comp was locked today so I couldnt work on it today. Ill see if i can tonight though. I finished the club DVD..well mostly. I finished the vids...but the program doesnt seem to see the files for the pearl harbor soundtrack, so Im workin on that. Good pics Duke.
By the way, now Im set on a MB for my first jet..in a couple of years... either that or the Jet Legend CT-114, I dont know if that kit is running or not though. I got a long time so ill wait and see.

RE: U-2 Maiden
Mike,
We didn't fly it all that much but other than not liking crosswinds there are no bad flying characteristics. We didn't use any kind of gyros or mixes and we thought it flew very well. If you're interested I can send you some photos of how we did the pogos.
Congrats again on a great job!
Paul
ps, I think Butch will be cutting another plug for a 1/6 scale TR-1...

RE: U-2 Maiden
Thanks Paul. Post the pogo pics. Maybe someone else out there is a U-2 nut as well.
Butch,
Make me down for a TR-1/U-2S. As long as each wing panel is under eight feet I can transport it

RE: U-2 Maiden
Here is how I did the pogos.
The wire is free to slide in the EZ connector body. When the servo moves it pushes the brass pin ( which extends out of the hatch) and ejects the pogo. To reload the pogo I move the brass pin against the spring, push the pogo in and release. Since the servo doesn't move for this the radio can be off.
The pogos mount into a spring loaded tube which pushes them out when the wire is pulled by the servo.
I wyed the pogo servos to the gear channel which seems to work okay....just gotta be careful where I retract the gear!
Before I came up with the spring arrangement reloading the pogos was a real pain. Now I can do it with the radio off.

OK, If I cut a new plug of the U-2R at 1/6th scale the wing panels will be 92" a total wing span of 200" and a fuse of 126". I can build glass wings like I usually do but I would like to talk to a glider guy on how they build their glass wings.(If someone knows a glider guy I would like to talk to them) Butch

RE: U-2 Maiden
yes...there is a rc field at Kaneohe Bay MCAS. We go on sundays when there is no Opps going on with the real runway. We use a small parkinglot kind of place with a long pavement of about 400 feet and 50 ft. wide, so far, only one that I have seen has used up almost all that runway. But Mike's Pogos didnt work because all the grass and weeds growing through the pavement. It would have been sweet too.

RE: U-2 Maiden
Hi Mike from sunny England,
Cool model[8D] I have always liked the U2 since I saw them flying regularly from RAF Alconbury in the 80's. (that is a USAF based leased from the RAF). There used to be a lay by off the A1 road that was in line with the end of the runway and it was possible to watch these machines landing, followed of course by the "radio car" talking the pilot down.
Since the flights were all secret naturally there was no flight plan logged with UK air defence, so they appear as an unknown target on the radar screens. The RAF would then have to scramble fighters to intercept them. Pretty funny really and pretty futile too since they would be up at 80k+ by the time the fighters got anywhere near. I spoke to a RAF pilot who had flown the U2's from there and he said the where very tricky to fly and to land.
Nevertheless a more interesting machine to model than just another F-16.
Best Regards,
John

Hi Mike,
Here's the link to the video I took when I visited a couple of weekends ago. Sorry it took so long to get it processed and uploaded.

RE: U-2 Maiden
They were certainly tricky to land, but MUCH harder to fly at altitude. Back when I was a controller at LA Center, I had several opportunities to talk with TR-1 pilots. When up at max altitude they got into a flight regime they called the 'Coffin Corner' where they had literally a 6 knot window to fly in. Slow down 3 knots and they get into stall buffet. Speed up 3 knots and they get into mach buffet. I was always really impressed with how they could talk with us so calmly while flying in this environment.
Most amusing TR-1 moment though came when a guy had a flameout about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas on his way back to Edwards AFB in CA. I asked if he wanted to declare an emergency and he said "Nah.. I'll just glide back. I should be fine." He was at a little under 70,000' at the time and when he arrived over the top of Edwards he was at 26,000' and had to orbit for several minutes to decend and land.
