Interesting story!
One report says the hole was 3 mtrs across!

Some good reading over at airliners about this. Apparently this section of the 747 carries an oxygen generator or something like that there.
Also this plane was 17 years old and had a history of corroded and fatigued parts.

I heard this also.... But working on a few different type of airliners, they all have a history of Corrosion and fatigue.
Should get some more info about this at work tomorrow.

That does not look like a fatigue or corrosion hole. Typically those types of failures will follow seams, stringers and ribs, acting like a zipper. This did none of that and it even took out whole sections of stringers.
Looks like an expolsive force of some kind. I would have expected the luggage to stay in there cans as well if it was a simple structural failure......why then is there so much debris in the hole?
