Default Jet flying in Adeliade

Here's a few pics from a local jet gathering in Adelaide on Saturday. We all had an awesome time with four new jets getting certification. Two Fly Eagle F16, Rookie 2 and JL Gripen.
Mine is the Rookie 2 with a Jetcat P160SE. Thanks to Todd for organising the fly in and Camo for the photo's.

I went to the Adelaide jet fly in a few years ago. Was an awesome show. First time I had seen a turbine in person.

Hi Blunderbum,
Adelaide is one of the main events on the jet circuit in Australia.

The next big meet, 50+ pilots, is Temora R/C Jets, on September19,20,21.
This is held at Temora Airfield in conjunction with Temora Council and Aviation museum.

Try to make it to this, you won't be disappointed.
To Granted, actually the saying is:
He who dies with the most toys, STILL dies alone.

Hope to meet you all at Temora

Why did the F 16 gear not come down???? Air loss or gear jamed????

Also what strange orientation is that F 18 in 2 inches off the deck??? Did the F18 have nose gear issues in that pic as only mains are out????

Great pics thanks for posting!!! I also have a Fly Eagle F 16 2 weeks off a maiden!!

The gear did not come down due to air leak in the retract system.

The F18 had a nose gear jam and landed with the rears down only. When the nose bounce on the grass the front gear popped out and continued rolling down the strip as if nothing happened.
The fly eagle F16's flew really nice but I believe they had a few issues with flutter. One has had the rudder control torn off and the other suffered some major elevator flutter on Saturday at high speed. It caused a 5955TG to burn out.
Just make sure you have good servo's and a solid linkage system with no slop, good luck with the maiden flight.

Hey

That was Todds F-16 with the blue missiles. My f-16 is the one with gray missiles. We both have P80 in them and they fly soooooo well. see pic

I was test flying the F-16 for Todd and when i went to do a gear pass i noticed that the front retract didn't come down. I tried a few times to get it out with no luck.

So Todd told me to do a belly landing with the gear up. So i brought her in nice and low and glided it onto the deck as smooth as i could.

Apart from the big scoop of fresh green grass in it's mouth there was no damage at all not even a scratch on the belly.

As for the "flutter" I personally think HG 5955 servos have problems with large elevators like the F-16s and f-18s have. I have melted the 2 HG 5955's in my hornet , one servo actually melted completely and deformed.
so no i only use JR 8711's or the 8911's (30KG) and they work perfectly.

As for my Super hornet i finally got it back into the air with a lot of help from Todd ( Todd the builder ). I had some serious issues with CG and did a few involuntary vertical maneuvers but managed to get it back onto the deck. LOL
Changed the CG a LOT and then tried again and had 2 nice flights. The nose gear stuck on one flight and popped out on landing when the nose touched down on the grass LOL it then took off again on a funny angle (see pic ) and then i landed on all three wheels.

Any way it was a fantastic weekend and i would like to congratulate Justin on converting to the dark side.
If you buy a Jet you are a goner! There is no going back now Justin.

Righteo to answer some questions, the grass mowing had no effect on the turbine and no damage, made the aircraft smell really fresh LOL.

The flutter was caused by faulty servoes they failed in straight and level flight after doing various manouvers. DO NOT PUT 5955s on large flying surfaces.

The retract problem was partly due to an air leak but not enough to stop the gear going up and down, what has happened is these retracts being new had very sharp edges on the retract block and the guide rails for the the pin, they when retracted are locked that tight that there is no room for movement so this caused the nose gear not to come down.

I have solved this problem by grinding these sharp edges off and subsequently have no more issues.

I had this problem with the standard retracts not the scale retracts like pauls, so mav do yourself a favour and check your gear.

Paul done such a lovely job of landing the 16 that no damage was sustained, even the gear doors stayed on and after a few servoe replacements and re- plumbing on the air installation it was ready for the air again.

As always my trusty Euro flew well with its 70th flight on sunday.

It was good to get the jet family to-gether and have a great weekend, my thanks goes out to Paul heft for doing the certifications and to the club, and to all those that showed the dedication in coming out in not so perfect conditions.

From what I have heard recently There are going to be a few large jets flying in adelaide skys soon.

Talk to you all soon.

Todd

Thanks Paul, maybe do this again before the summer hits us hard.

I have been reminded the jet day for the Barossa club is on the 19th Oct it would be good to see those that came to this one attend Barossa.

I have asked Stuart if camping is an option he tells me probably not a problem.

Jeremy, the hornet is coming along, have started detailing rivets, opening canopy, etc.

regards
Todd
