Since that's our system, I guess I can best answer the question. The canopy is moved using a standard high torque digital servo, the locking system is 2 JR 351 metal gear servos driving our canopy locking units. Our electronic canopy/ lock sequencer does the timing magic. Opens/Closes and locks every time! You can't use a cylinder on the F-16 canopy due to unique canopy geometry problems. Of course, You could try to use a valve and a cylinder to move the canopy, but in order to maintain zero clearance on the rear edge of the canopy, the rear of the canopy must first lift and then rotate back to open, so a cylinder doesn't work since it can only move in a straight line. Of course the real F-16 doesn't use a cylinder either...Hope this answers your question.
