Default ** INPUT NEEDED ** Log Book Fields for Electronic Log Book

I need your input guys. What fields / categories would you want in an electronic log-book (or any log-book for that matter.

Here's what I have so far:

Aircraft
Engine Type
Date
# of flights
Time per flight
Comments
ECU Mah Charge
Rec. Mah Charge (ability to set up multiple batteries)

Any other input appreciated.

I am not sure I would always actually record the data after each flight but it would be nice to have for future reference.

TX mah used
For JR equipment #fades A, B, L, R
#Holds
Turbine idle temp
Fuel remaining with time flying time

I keep a separate log per aircraft and have just 5 fields:

[ul][*] Date[*] # flights (on that date)[*] cummulative # flights on aircraft[*] cummulative # flights on engine[*] comments
[/ul]

I've been using this format for over 8 years now, and it works well for me.

One important thing is that I use the comment field to record issues, maintenance performed, etc. (You could use separate columns if you want, but I won't want the word doc getting TOO wide).

This means that I can easily see when I last lubed the brakes, check up on things like when the tires were changed, when the last time was that I had a fill-valve fail, etc. Useful for knowing whether any work I do on the aircraft is at a reasonable service interval, or whether there's potentially something wrong that's accelerating some component's wear / failure etc.

I think a log book is a great idea, good info to always look back at especially battery performance and charge times. I know to this day I use the GSU every time I start my engine and check temp and rpm each flight with out fail. I have to think that if an engine is going to fail there will be signs before it happens. A guy that keeps a log is more likely to keep his jet longer IMO. Good idea Chad
I like the idea of being able to enter aircraft type and what batteries are on board, that type of thing. Then have a section on each flight and status.

i keep my logs on form DA-2408-13-1 (and a -2 when necessary), i keep track of Date, Time, Flight #, Flight Time, Max Pump Voltage and any faults, all faults are corrected and noted as such in the corrective action block on the form it works for the Army, and it works for me.

i used to use the RS232 and download every flight but software/ECU version incompatibilities that i can't get JetCat to work with me on keep me from doing that now.

Number of times your caller tells you that you are:

1) Too high on approach

2) Turning base to final too soon

3) Over the fence way to fast for landing

Seriously, I think most of the good stuff is covered here....

Just keep it simple or let the user customize what field they want. Tracking the pump voltage and other turbine parameters is great, but is this really realistic for a plane that performs 5 flights every weekend?

I agree with Gordon, the most important thing is to track maintenance action items. I now always write down a todo list for each plane when I'm done unloading. My ideal electronic logbook would let me record:

- location (from a list I define because I mostly always fly a the same places)
- plane
- number of flights
- comment, mostly for flying tips (ex: keep more power until flare)

Then it would let me select, from a well defined list, some maintenance I need to do. ex: change main tires, change lg springs, etc... If the item is not in the list, it would let me add it.

Further, the software could automatically add periodic maintenance to the todo list. For each item, the maintenance frequency could be defined.

ex:

- clean fuel filter
- cycle batteries
- record/input turbine min/max params
- check flex plates
- etc..

Are you building an iPhone or android app? That would be very useful, especially if it can sync to some web site so all the data entry which is not at the field can be done from a regular computer.

Thanks

Arnaud

Just send Susan an email and confirm she received your dues and that you're on the list to get a membership packet. They're a little slow but remember it's not company that has a staff.

This is what I have on my log data file:
Date
Turbine on time
Mah used Kodiak 1 A123 Lft
Mah put back Kodiak 1
Mah used Kodiak 2 A123 Rt
Mah put back Kodiak 2
ECU battery usage
Starts
Pump max volts
Pump min volts
Trim adjustments and notes

I have no doubt that this will change with continued use, but it seems to have all that I want to monitor on the turbine and RC, I also have a seperate sheet for the GPS log for height and speed ect.

Since they came to my house, and my wife is the treasurer/secretary, I can say that 99% are either in folks hands, or in the USPS system, having been mailed two weeks ago.
There were two delays:
1) Getting the members cards from the volunteer who makes them for us (kind of hard to yell at someone who is donating time and material)
2) Getting the log books printed, and to us.

If your card has still not come in, the log book is in an envelope waiting for it. Given the cost of postage, it makes more financial sense to mail them together.
If you are a new member, the last issue of Contrails should also be in the envelope.

Queries are always welcome, and my e-mail, my wife's e-mail and all the officers e-mails are listed on the JPO website.
Hope this helps.

Chad

This is not going to be that easy to produce, I have my own small log book that I keep in my tool box, everybody has diferent needs as you may have find out by now []. I basically want what the AMA wants to see if needed plus one or two more items for me.

Date
Place
Equipment
Comments

The other stuff can be kept somewhere else.

Good luck man.

The last group of cards went out today.
Sorry for the delay but the printer has been acting up for the last month or so.

Date of aircraft's first flight, and last. Also year of first and last flight each aircraft. The # of flights per year each aircraft. This data is good for mods to airframe to see what holds up longer. Also, crash dates and data, and return to flight dates.

Average length of each flight.

Engine service and time, easy if said engine is noted on each aircraft data.

Total flights each year, and grand total also.

Guys,

Thanks for the input and feedback. The JPO logbook is a great little book, I am just trying to come-up with something a little more high-tech.

For those waiting on their JPO log book, I received mine just about a week ago, so they're on the way. They look good too. Great job guys and gals.

Again, I appreciate all the feedback.

Chad
