Heavy Metal Warbird Fly-In Lubbock, TX
Guys:
The Lubbock Wings Miniature Aircraft Society in Lubbock is not hosting a T-38 Jet Rally this year, but have decided to host an Invitational Scale meet instead, which includes all military aircraft in military paint schemes (including jets). We don't want Reno racers, civilian airliners, etc., but are hoping to bring Heavy Metal Warbird Scale to the West Texas Area. We did this last year and had a very good turnout. Please consider this email to be your invitation to attend with your military Jets and fly with us. I am bringing my MiG 15, my F-15, and possibly my L-39 (if I get it finished in time). James Love is bringing his Tam A-4, and George Jones is planning on attending with his scale Jets. Bill Holland and several OK City guys are planning on attending, and are bringing prop warbirds. The meet will be held at the Wings club field at Abernathy Municipal Airport on August 8 and 9, 2009. The field layout is N/S, and is 75 feet wide by 3000 feet long. There will be a pilot's meeting at 0900 on Saturday morning to outline the activities.
Most of the club members will be at the field starting Thursday August 6, to help with any early visitors and get a little early flying done. We are listed in the AMA contest calendar, and our landing fee is $20.00. Trophies will be awarded for Best Scale Flight, Best of Show, and People's Choice. We plan on having food at the field on Sat and Sun provided by a local Boy Scout Troupe, and are looking into either a catered Texas BBQ dinner or a dutch treat Resturant meal on Saturday night.
If you have GPS, type in Abernathy Municipal Airport and it will lead you right to the field. Additional information can be found on our website: Wingsmas.org.
We have made more improvements to our field with a new asphalt pit area, and upgraded pilot stations with guards. I think you will have a great time, and we look forward to seeing you. Remember, all military aircraft in military colors are welcome, however, please don't bring sport aircraft with a military paint scheme on it, as we are restricting the entries to the AMA Sport Scale rules (without documentation).
Hope to see you there. If you need more information, or directions, please email [email protected], or access the Wings website at: WINGSmas.org

RE: Heavy Metal Warbird Fly-In Lubbock, TX
Hi, Everyone!
I'm the event CD "Air Boss" for the weekend and am looking forward to meeting you all! Last year's event featured a lot of great action (runaway B-17 chasing someone down on landing- [X(]) and lots of great looking aircraft. It was really a ball! We have a nice selection of vendor goodies for door prizes to be given away as well as a open raffle for a Great Planes, RealFlight 4.5 "transmitter" and software setup. My good buddy, Les Morrow, mentioned three awards this year in his initial announcement and they are really going to look nice!
Our field in Abernathy (Abernathy Aerodrome) was awarded a nice field grant this year by the AMA. As a club, we were really excited! We still have a lot to do, but things are coming together for us quickly and we'll soon have a first rate flying facility. The site is an actual full scale airstrip, but gets VERY little use as maybe half a dozen planes come in and out on a weekly basis. We're proud of it and welcome all you scale warbird enthusiasts for a great weekend. As always, an FAA NOTAM will be published to announce our weekend activities and help ensure a quiet, peaceful weekend. Bring your metal, and have fun with us. Hope you can attend!
The link for our website and details is here: www.wingsmas.org
Please let me know if you would like to pre-order one of our 2009 Wings Warbird Invitational T-shirts! S-XL are $15, 2XL and 3XL are $18. We'll have a few on site, but may not have your size if you wait!
EDIT:
We'll have a pilot's dinner at Cagle Steaks at 7:30 pm Saturday evening, "Dutch treat" (pay your own tab). They have a wide selection of great food including ribeye steaks, grilled chicken, barbeque and fajitas all served up with West Texas style. They are located at the NW corner of 4th Street and FM179 just a few miles from N Loop 289. Please join us for an excellent meal and evening. see www.caglesteaks.com for more dinner info.
I was able to reserve a few rooms with a group rate at a very conveniently located Holiday Inn Express here in Lubbock. The rooms will be available until August 1st at the rate of 89.99 + tax. The hotel has a free breakfast buffet in the mornings as well as all the typical efficiency hotels amenities, including a pool. Please call 1-800-465-4329 or (806) 687-2500 locally and ask about the Wings Warbird Invitational group rate. The hotel is located at the intersection of I-27 and U.S. 84. You can get additional hotel information at www.Hiexpress.com . To get to our field, one just need get back on I-27 and proceed north. It's just a short 20 minute drive to Abernathy.
Thanks!

I saw this event listed on the AMA calander. Looks like a good time.
My son & I are going to try and make it.
Maybe his Corsair will be ready by then.

Too bad the ban on sport jets - great site to fly at and a decent road trip from DFW. Looks like the weather was more cooperative than the last two years of the Jet Rally at least.

Old Technology Still in Action! Doug H's Yellow Aircraft A-4 (Duct-Fan) takes off on another hairy mission. After about three orbits, the engine died and he dead-stick it downwind into the grass. That part of the landing was great! Then it slid out onto the runway and picked up some road rash. Well, thats it for what I took at this years event. Looking forward to the 2010 Event!

RE: Heavy Metal Warbird Fly-In Lubbock, TX
Hey guys. Just want to say again what a great time we had as the team from Lubbock, Tx WINGSmas at this years Warbirds over Oklahoma. It's only 4 weeks now til we hold our Warbirds over West Texas event. I hope to see all of you there. This year is going to be really special. We'll be having a full scale Vintage WWII era plane flying in on Saturday the 7th. We're alos having Patty *****e and Laverne (The Andrews Sisters) to perform for our Pilots dinner on Saturda night. We're also having Miss Lubbock Centennial. She will be at the airfield on Saturday for a few hours to have pictures made with pilots and assist in doing pilot interviews. That should be lots of fun. She will also be performing for us at the pilots banquet. We're going to have a great, full day of flying and a great banquet to top things off. We're looking forward to having Jimmy Cowman again this year. I don't know what he's bringing to fly but I'm sure it'll be top notch. Peter Fritsche will there also from Allen Texas with his giant scale P-38. Will Bill Holland have his big new Corsair with the folding wings ready to fly by then? Hopefully. This is going to be great, so don't miss it!
