Default Stingray Maiden Flight Report. UPDATE!

Did a couple of hours of car today and went to St-Foy club (Quebec) to do the Maiden flight. A more experienced jet pilot (Gilles Pelletier) did it for me.

It was on a grass field, not a golf green but not too rought. The Ray took of in about 300-350' a little of aileron and more elevator than it should. We found that it need about 1/8 up elev, probably not enough reflex in the wing. The plane is FAST and it dont slow down easily. We got upper tank prob and the engine went out gear up and land on high grass with no damage.

So now i have too check my plumbing and i will add speed brake on rear strut to help the plane slowing down.

I wish we could do a second flight to see how fast this thing go! Gilles didnt exceed 1/2 thortte and it was fast on straight and level flight.

More to come next week!

Default Stingray Maiden Flight Report. UPDATE!

I think i know the prob. When i did the paper clunk i had difficulties to put it in the tank so i enlarged the hole too munch. When i was filling the tanks i saw that the upper was leaking a little bit by the plug. So i think that the upper was sucking air then it was acting like a vent...upper with a vent = fuel was lowering and the upper didnt stay full..Will buy a new 4 oz tank and will dremel a little bit the paper clunk...

I didnt take pics 'cause i'm still on primer..

Wren MW54, Y/A retracts, HS225BB on Elevons and rudders, JR 811 digital on speed brakes and wheels, JR 517 on retracs and brakes valves, one 6V packs for all the above and a 3.6V for the pump.

I should use mini servos for valves but i had some old 517 un-used.. that cause me a little room prob but it's ok.

Had some glitch on the speed brake servos only, it's the one closest to the ECU and Pump, at the time we did the range test i found that my batt. pack was low (5.8V) maybe taht was the reason but we didnt take any chance i charged the pack and disconnected the servos for the fist fly i will check that this week.

Default Stingray Maiden Flight Report. UPDATE!

Hey Claude, I'm glad to hear it came back in 1 piece.

Man, I almost had you beat. I tried to fly mine last week but suffered a fuel restriction problem from a kinked line buried back in the fuse. Its since been replaced and works again. with the size of this model, you're a brave man to fly it in primer!

I did get a few slow taxi tests in an found my nose steering a bit sensitive so the expo might need to go up a bit. I had heard a few reports of reflex needed in the wings so mine are set at 3/16 up with +/- 1.5" travel at 25% expo. I'm using Hitec 5625's on the ailerons, 5245's on the rudders, 225's on the steering, retract valve and brake valve, and a 625MG on the speed brake. I've also cut down the aileron throw to 70% of the recommended values in the manual.

If you're using an unregulated 6.0V pack, it could be causing the glitches. Sometimes the voltage can start out significantly higher than 6.0 and some servos just don't like it... I'm sticking to a 4.8V 1300 mAh pack. The ECU supplied with your motor should be pretty good with respect to EMI generation.

Hopefully we can compare notes later this week!

Kelly

Default Stingray Maiden Flight Report. UPDATE!

I'm using triple rate and lots of expo!

High : 70% rate, 40% expo
Mid : 60% rate, 35% expo
low : 50 rate, 30% expo

The maiden was made mid on elevator and low on aileron. was a little bit slow on aileron but good on elev.

I will had some strips on the wigs this week to put some contrast, 'cause like you say, it's hard to see!

will paint it only this winter

Default UPDATE!!

Ok 2 more flight on it afrer some modification. UAT runs good now. Marcel did another flight on it and everything went good, with a fair front wind he didnt use the air speed brake and the plane landed quit well. Next shot was MY turn on the stick...I was quit nervous but i did it ok. I was uncomftable with Marcel's setup (40% expo on everything) and i flew it kind of slow. Flying it slow give us the chance too see that it have tendency to 'Deutch rolling' or 'Deutch coupling' (dont remember the exact term ) at slow speed. After the landing i saw on my 10X that i didnt put any differential and that coud be a the key. I setted it up at 35% differential and 25% expo everywere but i didnt fly it. I will try it tomorrow with that setup.

How munch differential do u use on your Stingray??
