Membership fee? Why do all these web sites that start off free think they can start making a lot more money by charging for their services? That's not how you get more members and/or users. In my opinion, that's how you drive them away.

When you start charging for this service (after it's been free for so long), people will be less inclined to freely put their stuff up for sale. When less people start visiting and there's less traffic through the site, the advertisers (who do pay to advertise) don't see this site as worthwhile to show their products, and they pull their ads. Thus less income coming into RCU.

This is exactly how the taxation system works here in the US (and a good number of other countries around the world).

But other than the fee part, the merger does sound like a good idea.

Anyhow, just my opinion.

It's Got my vote.....

Russ....Read the thread anouncing the changes....You wont HAVE to pay. If you like things just the way they are then you dont have to pay a cent. Pay a small fee and get the benefits of paid membership....

Hey lov2flyrc,

My eyes must be getting old. I missed that part of it that says there is no fee. So regarding that last post, ignore it....except for the good idea part. Ha! Whoops!

Regarding the membership, I've never heard of that. Can anyone shed some light on it. What do you get out of it more than the basic membership?

Thanks

Russ

well......as a non paying member the only thing you will loose is the ability TO PLACE A FOR SALE ADD FOR FREE. Which in my opinion is FAIR. (we all like free and nothing last forever) And even though i personally have never sold anything on RCU.....many of you have sold items here FOR FREE. kinda like taking your car to a consignment dealer FOR FREE.
If you choose not be a member NO BIG DEAL....you can still sell an item. You will pay a little more to list the item then a member would but THE ABILITY TO DO SO IS STILL THERE.
I am assuming it would kinda be like EBAY..
there will be a listing fee--------------FOR NON MEMBERS--------
and a total amount of sale commission fee-----FOR NON MEMBERS-

Thats how I understood it anyways.

We will offer special membership upgrades at nominal rates and deliver to those upgraded members enhanced services, including "no-insertion fee" auctions and classifieds, free R/C magazine subscriptions (3 issues of your favorite magazine at no charge!), discounts on R/C merchandise, commission-free auctions, RCU hats, RCU decals and much more.

Russ i agree with your first post, when something has been free for so long and then you start to charge for it you will loose the interest of some people. i generally come to rcu to look at the classifieds section. i have bought and sold stuff and now its going to cost me an insertion fee a membership fee and a commission fee hell on a 25.00 item i might as well give it away. ~JOHN BANNER~

Default over what?!?

Are we really stirring a fuss over an OPTIONAL $20 a year membership fee?!?

Geez, you don't even have to pay that and just pay an insertion fee (a bad joke about Amsterdam comes to mind :devious: ) when you post it. Paying a fee for selling something here has been encouraged and voluntary for some time - and if you can't spring for that, you are truly too cheap for jet flying.

It's still cheaper than MAN or RCJI or whatever, and a hell of a lot more usefull. I've saved much time and money by using the knowledge gained on this site.

Where to I sign up?

Guys, I'm personally not thrilled with this new merger. I still remember RC Online and what happened with them when they kept expanding and then merged. Great website starting out, then they kept "improving", expanding, getting bigger, more forums, etc. Then they further "improved" the site with pop-up ads, more advertisements etc., until it got to the point no one could access it or download anything within a reasonable time frame.

Then RCU started - new game in town with everything that RCO was in the beginning, and ceased to be, and everyone jumped to the new site - great response, no pop-ups, superfast downloads, and now it seems that RCU is repeating RCO's old path. RCO was dead on arrival after they merged... nobody goes there anymore - I finally deleted it from my bookmarks because nothing was happening day after day after day -- Hope RCU doesn't end up the same way. Oh well, guess it's time for some other enterprising soul to start all over again with another new site without all the commercial hoopla - that is, until the commercial interests get wind of the next success story, and want to merge. I wish RCU well in this new endeavor, but I still remember the disaster RCO ended up with. We'll see, I guess... Wonder when another new site will start up to replace RCU now that they're going big time?????????

Default RCO, RCU, etc.

If you can't see the difference between then & now, you aren't looking very hard.

I'm unsubscribing this thread, there are much better things to be concerned about.

Les,

RCO died because there was no one at the helm when problems started to rear. RCU has become a full time job for Marc and a crew of employees ! You cant compare this place to what RCO was, not even close! RCU is just taking the next logical step forward to serve you , the RC modeler . Trust me, this place will never take the route RCO did!
And for those that complain about not being able to sell your stuff for free any more, boo hoo pirate: . Give me a break, you have had the run of this place for a year and a half for zero, zip, nada.... cant believe you would whine about paying a buck or two to sell your items.....

Getting to the point where I'm almost embarrassed to post in these forums. The threads popping up here lately are pathetic. :disappoin
