QSAA Fly-In on Eldorado Dry Lake near Las Vegas, must have been mid-80's. Bryan Seegers did a demo flight with a model that looked like a Northrop drone. The turbine, perched on top and completely exposed, was hand-built by Bryan. This was shortly after Jackman's success. To my knowledge, Bryan was the first to fly a turbine model in the US.

Wow! So half of that thrust range is probably required just to move it's own weight.

Sophia had 2 engines the 450-11lbs thrust and the 850-18lbs the 850 never really took of because of the KJ-66 clones RAM , both started directly off of jet-A. JPX was propane all the way.

The KJ-66 was an improved version from Jesus Artes of the Thomas Kamps-66. This is what most used as a starting point for mass production of what you know today. They were higher effiency and less weight. Sorry if I misspelled any names.

The first turbine I ever saw was Larry Wolfe's Golden West powered F-9F Cougar at the Woodland/Davis jet meet in Oct 1996. It was the first R/C model jet that looked right, flew right, sounded right and smelled right, just like the big ones.

My first remembrance of a turbine jet was at the 1994 TOC. The pilot was doing a demo flight and flamed out. He flew it into the parking lot and broadsided a police car. Anyone else remember that?!

who remembers in the early JPX days a father and son team from Europe that had a superb flying wing. Amazing aerobatic performance and from what I remember nice and precise.
Now a photo or video of that would be cool.

First time was a Yellow F-16 with a Golden West F3D67 at the Basin. It was when Bob Wilcox had WKR Productions. His master modeler Chris flew it. It must have been around 1992,3 or 4 don't remember.

I can remember Bob Wilcox flying a Yellow A4 around the same time frame with an GW F3D67

For me it was on my honeymoon, late October 1996, at the TOC, the year Steve won. Ron: you were there! The marriage did not last, but man..... the JPX memories shure as hell did!!! Garland flew that sucker and I was hooked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first i recall was at a Leeton Jet event in 1995. It was a Bolly Scorpion with JPX. Everyone was very excited when it started up and did its engine run. The second run it had there was going to be its first flight, well acceleration was slow and the wire fence running parallel to the runway got closer and closer until the jet went straight into it, got all tangled up and melted the back end. No electronic cutoof valves then so someone had to manually run over and shut it down. Too much melting to be able to see it fly then..

It was Garland Hamilton. Remember the two ducted fan BVM F-4? One flamed out.

My first turbine was a Sophia J-850, wow that was a startup, BOOM.
First jet was in the 80s a Byron F-16 and it was great flyer.
At that time my hero was Col. Bob Thacker, that’s funny he still is, Met him the first time at superman 2001 a true gentleman.
I miss the old days when you could tell the men from the boys.[]

I think you are talking about Harald and Harald Piggish. From memory I seem to remember the Starjet being one of their designs and they also did a large ME262 with twin JPX's.

I remember a REALLY nice guy with an F-4 in a Jolly Rogers (in retrospect, I think it was a BVM F-4, I could be wrong). He was nice enough to tell me all about it, as I had my Sig 40 trainer in my hand.

I saw it fly and I KNEW I HAD to get me one of those.

I was blown away with the model and how nice this guy was. Anyone know who could that be?

Yea I am with Roy on this one. It was Larry Wolfe and his Cougar at the Woodland Jet event with the Golden West in it. Remember it so fondly that the Golden West ended up being my first turbine engine.

The first turbine I saw was Kent Noggy flying a Viper at top gun around 1994...It was unreal

And Woketman, I clearly remember the Phantoms at TOC since I was the one flying one of them (my dad's supersonic eagle) and Noggy was flying the one that flamed out (cut the power back while inverted on a reverse cuban eight... you couldn't do that with ducted fans). Back then, those twin ducted fan phantoms were real showstoppers.

Makes me happy to hear someone remembers that flight... I have it recorded in my mind
