Default Jet Meet Ethics Question

Jet Meet Ethics Question
Is it ethical to take another clubs date for a jet event that’s closer than 200 miles apart that’s been the same weekend for four years in a row just because you have corporate sponsors? Well that’s what appears to be happening. St. Louis RC has had the same weekend for their Gateway Jets event for the last four years. Now Illini Super Jets has scheduled their jet event the same weekend. These clubs are less than 200 miles apart and for most jet guys 200 miles is like being next door. Now I know Illini Super Jets has some big sponsor’s like JR and Horizon so I ask is this like an elephant squashing a bug because they can?

Posted 11/2/2009 10:52 PM Gateway Jet Rally , June 11-13,2010 is sponsored by St.Louis R/c Flying Association. See website -SLRCFA.com- for more information.

How about the St. Louis club scheduling their event on top of Gus Hudson's Mt. Pleasant Jet Rally. I know it's well over 200 miles, but some of us hope that this will not diminish Gus's efforts.

Mt. Pleasant is between 500-600 miles from St. Louis even the AMA Rules for class AA events separation is a 300 mile radius, so I don’t believe those two events would hinder each other’s participants’. I could be wrong.

I received a letter of invitation from the St. Louis club and I imagine I am not the only one. As You said earlier, 200 miles is nothing for most jet guys. Just an FYI

To try and stop all this bickering, John Redman and I had a very cordial phone conversation last night.  He told me how the dates for his "meet" were picked and I understand his position.  It is now up to the board of directors of the St.Louis R/C Flying Association to decide what to do.  I would appreciate it if all the "bad feelings' and bad vibes that are being discussed and posted were to stop.

John,

I have just picked up on this thread. While it is unfortunate that we have conflicting dates I have heard from several of the guys who are still planning on coming to Mt. Pleasant and I hope that you will too. I don't believe that it is possible to keep the conflicts from occuring, there just are not enough dates available. I fully understand those pilots who would perfer to attend the larger events and if they decide not to come to ours I hope they have a fun and safe weekend.

I'm kinda in the same boat - I used to be a member of SLRCFA, and would like to make it back to STL to fly. But Gussie's event is too close for me to pass up. No bad feelings to either club. [8D]

I have to AGREE!!! Sometimes things like this happens. The SMALLER events doesn't seem to matter to them, so they do it anyway! I know we have had to change are dates many times! SO.... What we have done for the last 3 years is call the club Pres. and let all them know what is going one and see if it conflicts with anything! This should be that same with ALL!!!! Plus it is upsetting that they KNOW the dates and they decide to change for really NO REASON!!!!!! This is just MY 2 cents!!

The MS Gang is kind of central to all of the meets that are scheduled for that same weekend. While we would like to go to the Illini meet we have been going to Mt. Pleasent for years and will be going back there. There is not really any way to avoid the conflicts, Top Gun was moved this year and falls on the same weekend as MS Afterburner, I guess you just choose the one you want to go to.

As Phil stated we talked at lengths the other night discussing this issue. I have to say when I received the phone call on stepping on Mt. Pleasant I was a bit shocked with it being 750 miles away. I would love to see the Mississippi gang but I totally understand them heading to Mt. Pleasant. This is the only date that will work for our club and myself (being the guy making it happen). I have offered to help the St. Louis guys out with some sweet prizes for their event regardless of when it happens.

As for the large "corporate" sponsorship, glad to hear we have it. Ken does this mean you will be sending a check? Our sponsorship level from JR is no different in size than what is given to Jets Over the Heartland, California Jets, etc. With the company delivering to over 1000 events a year, we cannot and will not hord sponsorship for our home event. We are here for the masses when it comes to that. I believe history shows that across the board.

I am thankfull Phil took the time to speak with me. This has happened many times in the past across the country. No malitious intent at all, just the way it fell for us.

John, I don't think you are stepping on the Mt. Pleasant event. It's just that a number of us from here in Texas, Mississippi and Arkansas wanted to do your event this year but falling on the same date as Mt. Pleasant kinda put the brakes on that.

I understand totally DR and Bob - O. I'd love to see you guys but understand you love Gus more than me.

As long as you are out flying jets that is all that matters!! Now if you were out playing with toy cars or something, that would be different.

Give us a break

Looks like John is trying to put a guilt trip on us.

I hope we all meet up again so we can have a group hug and share the love

BTW John, while we are feeling the love here, send me another HABU. I think mine will be worn out by the time the first jet event gets here. When I take it to the field all I do is charge batteries (4) so everyone else can fly it.

You know, the fact that two jet meets that are 750 miles away from each other can interfere tells you *a lot* about the jet community - which is one of the reasons we like it. On the other hand, that does mean that its going to be hard to schedule meets on non-competing weekends so I think we just have to do the best we can, and if it happens, make a choice and give each other a break when that happens...

Perhaps maybe the JPO could take on the task of acting as a nation-wide clearing house/coordinator for jet events so that CD's could have a place to go for an *up-to-the-minute* list of events and dates?

Bob
