Default Which big turbine...AMT...JC...or ?

OK I am ready to buy a large turbine in the 48-52# class. I have a Skymaster Viper and I am about to order a CARF Ultra Lightning. Originally I was going to install JC Rhino but now I believe I should go with a bigger turbine. My question is: What's the best choice...AMT Olymbus HP or a Jet CAT P200 or the Jet Central Mammoth? Is one of these that much better than the others? Reliability is the #1 priority.

Although the planes you have chosen will fly with a 30lb engine, a bigger will take off in a shorter distance, fly faster and use the fuel a lot faster.
Plus the larger engines will cost more.

Mate,

I agree with rolsen12, but if you absoluteley have to have one of the BIG ones and reliability and aftersales service is your #1 objective - you will be very well advised to go with an AMT Olympus HP from AMT Netherlands.

Cheers

I would avoid anything larger than a 160n thrust turbine in the Viper. I have a P-200 powered Viper and the majority of my flight is at 1/2 power. The 200 is a waste in the Viper because the plane can not handle the speed that the P-200 will deliver. I recently pulled the P-200 out of the Viper and replaced it with a EvoJet Booster 160.

I have them both (P200 and Amt Olympus)

See it like this:

A P200 is a Toyota , good for normale use.

A Olympus is a Rolls Roys, It will never and never let you down.

(I Know the difference of the 2 cars also)

just my 2 cents

I'd love to try an Olympus HP, but being in the US makes service impractical. The Mammoth is new, so reliability is TBD. The safe choice is a P-200SX. The 200 would be awesome in the Ultra Lightning and very dangerous in the Viper.

I will have to disagree, P-200 is no way considered a Toyota, I agree the Oly is a great engine, but the P-200SX is also a great engine. Not mt 2 cents

AMT NL turbines are the finest turbines money can buy. That is all I fly. If you are looking for overall performance and reliability the AMT NL wins hands down over the Jet Cat. They are both great turbines but if money in not an object, then you can't beat a AMT/NL. If you are restricted by a budget, then the Jet Cat would be my second choice. I have over 300 trouble free flights on 3 airplanes..

Thanks for all the input. i hear you loud and clear that the big turbines may be too much for the Viper so I'll put the Rhino in that one. As for the Ultra Lightning I think it can handle the big turbine and it sounds like the AMT may the way to go but the only thing i don't like is sending it to the neatherlands for repair and the fact that it must be connected to a computer to change any settings. I just wonder how often you have to change the settings.

AMT/NL service is not impractical.... You never have to send it in for anything !!!! Rarely even bearings.... I have shipped mine a few times, not because it broke.. (But upgrade and such.. ) JetCat is a awsome engine as well... never owned one but that would be my #2 choice for sure... The AMT/NL is more money for sure.. But alot of that is because of the Euro/Dollar exchange rate.....

Good luck on your decision !!!

You could also look at the mammoth from Jet Central to complement your Rhino....

The lifetime warranty doesnt hurt either..

The Mammoth would be the least expensive but I am worried about a new product that may have some bugs to work out. But even with that said it is still on my list and I have had good service from Eric. I just wish AMT had a dealer and service in the U.S.

Dos007,

I have been flying with AMT/NL since 1997 and have only once sent a Pegasus Mk.2 back (to re-weld one of the legs inside the rear cone - (could have had it done locally but simply wanted it done by Bennie). At the same time he upgraded the old lady to 13.5 kg's. I own 5 x AMT/NL engines, two of which are HP's. Never had any bearing issues or any other work done to them - well over 2000 fights in total. Also own a JetCat PHT3 in my heli and a small FS 70 Funsonic. Whilst the latter two are great engines, they simply don't have the class of the AMT's. I also owned a USA AMT some years ago, but not for very long.

As for hooking up the AMT/NL turbines to a computer - no big deal, I only do it once in a while (like three times in ten years) and it takes 30 seconds to do. The AMT/NL software is extremely easy to install and use. What's more, I do it with my laptop and could do it at the field, but never have. Should you need to, you can email the turbine download to AMT Netherlands for them to work with it and advise you.

All turbines are good, some are just better than others. In the end you get what you pay for - and AMT/NL after sales service is priceless!!

Cheers

You can connect the JC ECU to a PC too if you want..
And you've experienced Eric's after sales service.. Just ask the recent customer who had trouble getting his rabbit to light off..
They've sent him a complete replacement turibne..

As for the mammoth being new, they really do their testing and refinement.. they also stand by their products..
The first rabbits had a possible problem with the turbine wheels, they replaced them all at no cost to the customer and the turnout was under 2 weeks for each engine..

Their factory quality is amazing.. Every service renews your lifetime warrent (this includes the new cerarmic lighter)..
Even if you crash, the repair at the factory repair resets the warranty as well..

dos007:

I welcome the opportunity to let you fly my classic Lightning. . . .Rhino powered of course. There are may Lightnings and Ultra Lightnings flying with Rhino's and all literally blow by the "big blockis" who challenge. This was evident here at FJ10 this past week.

As for Viper, you are well advised by others. . . .nothing larger than Rhino as well. . .been to many meets and observed Vipers . . . .stay in the 30 to 36lb range. Viper is a floater on landing and very light on wing in flight.

As for Mammoth. . .here at FJ10, we let the public see just how great a turbine we have brought to the show. Installed in a BVM Ultra Bandit, its performance indeed caught the attention of many. Those who have waited, will not be disappointed. 48lb thrust - just under 5lb weight and 23oz per minute in fuel consumption.

Best regards,
Eric

I would love to fly your UL but I think you fly mode2 and I am an old mode1 flyer. I will call you this week to discuss me getting another Rhino for a different project. Eric are you going to the Mississippi event?

I think it's fair to say that the P-200 and the Olympus are both good engines. But the Oly is very well made and is less likely to give you any problems during a long ownership period. I've been playing with toy jets for 10 years now and have recently bought my first AMT for the Ultra Bandit. It really is brilliant, so much so that I bought another AMT a couple of weeks ago.

I own a AMT 450USA and I love the power!!! But,,,,, the only thing that I am not feeling, is sending my engine over seas for repair!!!!! I payed $1700. for a 45lb. thrust turbine how can you say no!!! But, in hined sight if I new what I know now, a P-200!!!!!!! I did a price check($250-$400 roundtrip + cost of repair)!!! If anyone has any better ideas for repair for a 450??? I also noticed that the AMT450USA has a very very low resale value on (RCU) for a 45lb. turbine compaired to a P-200!!??? P-200 wins hands down (service is very very important)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The AMT/NL turbines rarely need service from normal use and VERY rarely do you ever need to make any kind of adjustments on the turbine ECU, it is just a non issue. The service to the Netherlands takes about 4 days to ship and the turnaround time not to bad. If you take good care of the turbine your first service for normal use would be in the range of 300-500 flights....It does not get any better then that period! It is the best turbine you can buy...
