Default Setting Up Reflex

I don't why I just thought of this, but wanted to see what the "masses" thought.

When I set up my first Hot Spot, I used the the radio to "set" the reflex and have seen many others do the same. I had zero problems doing it that way.
I was wondering if it would be prudent or better to set the reflex with the linkage, in turn, leaving the servo in it's true centered position?

Im sticking my neck out here to get really embarassed. I've been in this hobby a while and I don't know what reflex is. Please explain, maybe i refer to it with other terminology.
Thanks

Default Setting Up Reflex

Scott, reflex is the up elevon trim required to trim a flying wing design to fly straight & level. On a flying wing (which does not have the conventional wing & rear horizontal stabilizer set up), the aft portion of the wing generally provides negative lift (down force) to balance out the pitching moment, as the stab does on a conventional design. Much of this rear down force comes from having a bit of up elevon. George: as long as you are talking reasonably small deflections, setting up with the radio is OK, but watch out for binding at the extremes. It is better to bias your set up with the fact in mind that you will always have the elevons shifted up. In other words set it up so that when the servo is centered, at 90 degrees to your control rod, the elevon is already up at the recommended reflex, then do minor radio adjustments from there. I always go back after I see where it trims in flight and redo the centers mechanically just to be pure. Its an iterative thing, but not difficult. Either way, be sure to check that you can absolutely achieve your max throws with no binding at the extremes and that each surface has symmetrical throws! The MPX programmable servos are excellent for this as is the new JR Matchbox.

Default Setting Up Reflex

George,

On my Spots, I have always set the reflex with the linkage. I usually start at about 6-8mm and the adjust with the trim and leave er b.

Default Thanks

Thanks guys, I thought the way to do it properly was with the linkage. Like I said earlier, I don't know why I just thought about it now.

Thanks again,
George
