Kirk,
Wow, you've come full circle....seems like forever ago you built a beautiful aeronaut panther. Can't wait to see how this one shapes up. I've always liked the panter and thought ziroli had the size bang on.
Did you laminate the ply with CF cloth in a press, or did you use something like the dragon-plate pre-made sheets on a sheet of ply before cutting? Looks nice.
Thanks Sean. Wow, you remember the Aeronaut Panther. That was a few years ago

I laminated carbon cloth onto the ply formers with West Systems laminating epoxy. I brushed the epoxy on and scraped off the excess like you do when glassing an airframe. Then I laid a plastic sheet over the formers and put weight on top.

Sweet!! That ESC does looks slightly smaller and lighter than the one that came with my DS-94. Positive improvement. It looks like your controller doesn't have the anti-sparking lead, rather two servo leads?
How do you like the fan on first inspection? Pics don't do it justice...

Thanks Sean. Peter told me the DS-77 HST and the DS-94 HST are coming with the 160A controller instead of the 180A one like you have. He said after extensive testing of the 160A controller, Schubeler made the decisionto switch to it because it can easily handle the current draw of either fan and it had a smaller, lighter foot print.

The second, shorter servo lead is labeld "Programming Box." The 160A controller doesn't have the anit-spark wire. I'm not sure but the anti-spark may be built into the controller. The controller manual is in German so I can'tverify that yet. I will place a call to Peter to see if he has an English version of the controller manual. If he doesn't, I'llemail Ralf to see if he can translate it to English.

On first inspection, the quality is outstanding. It's on par with the quality of the BVMEVF but I won't compare the fans beyond that because they are designed for two different goals, meaning the BVMEVF is designed for high dynamic thrust and the DS HST fans are designed for high static thrust.

For the ignorant and the layman. Whats the difference between High Dynamic Thrust and High Static Thrust?
I'll be the first to admitt that I am layman and not an engineer. So, here's my understanding of the difference between static and dynamic thrust. Static thrust comes into play at zero to low speeds. It's what gets the plane moving at takeoff. As the plane starts moving, dynamic thrust takes over (I don't know at what point this happens but I'm sure there are engineering formulas that can calculate this)and is a function of air speed, blade pitch of the rotor, and how clean the air is that's being fed into the rotor. A fan that's designed to take advantage of dynamic thrust performs best when the intake ducting feeds clean air to the rotor and has the potential to produce ahigh efflux speed in flight (the speed of the air exiting the rear of the exhaust tube). The takeoff run of the plane may be longer because the static thrust may not be as high. A fan that's designed to take advantage of static thrust produces a lot of push in the low speed range, i.e. at takeoff. The takeoff run would be shorter. The fan performs nearly the same in aclean air environment or a dirty air environment so good ducting or no ducting at all really doesn't effect the performance. It's designed to get larger, heavier planes in the air but the top speed most likely is lower than a plane with a high dynamic thrust fan.

If there are any engineers orout there that see any flaws, please let us know.

Now that I have finished other projects I was working on, I can begin my winter build. The fuse formers were cut out earlier, see the beginning of this thread. So, to begin the build I started out bydry fitting the formers in the fuse to check for fit and noticed a potentialiy weak area, especially with the light layup of the glass. There are 2 formers just in front of the cockpit for the nose gear and there are 2 formers at the mid wing section of the fuse for the main gear. There is nothing in between these formers. I touched the section of glass between the formers and there was good amount of flexing. i was intending to lay some carbon fiber in the area of the gear doors so they would be nice and stiff when I cut them out so I killed two birds with one shot and laid carbon fiber from the front of the fuse to the trailing edge of the wing. This added 8 ounces of weight and stiffened the fuse up nicely.

Next, I started construction of the horizontal stab. I laid the plans on the building board and pinned the ribs in place, added the spars, sanded and sheeted. I deviated from the plans by adding 1/2 inch balsa blocks for hinging because I will use Robart pin hinges instead of the flat nylon hinges shown on the plans.

cool project Kirk
I'll be following along. One of the clubs I fly at the president has a Ziroli Panther I believe with a P-80 in it... flies really nice.
He has had some tracking problems with the steering but that may be more his setup than anything. I know he added a gyro to help keep it straight on take off.

Back in the day I watched two of these at a meet fly on os 91 dynamax power and they flew well... they struggled on take off but once on step they flew real nice.
Your going to have like three times the power those guys had

keep up the good work
I'm about done with my move and have been setting up my shop so I can get back to building... it been 2 months since I've touched a plane []

later

The plans show theelevators as having oneservo with a U-shaped rod connecting the left and right elevator. I perfer to have a servo per elevator and the JR DS3421MG just fit in the bay between the 2nd and 3rd ribs. I laid carbon fiber in the bay to strengthen the skin and let it set up over night (1st Photo). Then I made up some hardwood servo mounting blocks. Just before drilling them I glued .010 G10 to each side. This prevents the blocks from splitting when drilling and/or attaching the servos (Photos 2).Once the carbon was dry, the servos were attached to the mounting blocks and were glued in place with Hysol.

I started sheeting the bottom of the horizontal stab when I realized I didn't have enough 1/16th to finish it. I had just enough to complete the stab. I'll sheet the elevators after I get some more sheeting. I'm also waiting on hysol glue to arrive so I can glue the formers in the fuse. It should arrive tomorrow. In the meantime, I framed the right wing. It is ready for sanding and sheeting.
