So I ordered all the springs and stuff i needed to preload my kj's rear bearing assembles it and waaaayyyy tooo tight. shaft would turn but not spin. a little history is i bought all the components i could off an ebay guy. then i found JM Precision and bought their preload spring and a wave washer. after researching their shaft tunnel is extra long so the spring wont work for me and seems too stiff anyways. so i called a known reputable U.S. turbine dealer and they were gracious enough to sell me a shim kit. I always thought the depth of the bearing grove in the shaft tunnel was just to house the spring to preload the outer race to keep it from spinning when the shaft tunnel expanded. but the company that sold the shim kit tells me they only shim to set the height of the compressor wheel. so im confused at the preload theory and also the setup. I also have the version 2 shaft tunnel that i thought i read didn't need preloading but then how does the outer race not spin? if someone could shed some light on the theory i could figure my own setup out based on that. P.S. i do have Kamps book but there's sooo many KJ designs I just need theory of why and i can finish designing my own. Thanks

it all depends on the tunnel you use..most tunnels with the exception of JM are made for the wave washer and bolt right into the diffuser at the other end. The space at the end of the tunnel is for the rear bearing and wave washer, it is necessary to keep the bearings (front and rear) in good contact with the races as they do not use a bearing cage ( angular contact). with the bearings in place and the wave washer as well the shaft with compressor and turbine; use shims to make sure things turn freely..you may not need them at all...post pics of this assembly...diffuser and tunnel bolted together ..with shaft bearings and turbine/ compressor all together

with no shims everything turns freely and i cannot pull or push the compressor front or rear and have anything rub. i will post pics but if you ebay KJ 66 im using welleylands parts. p.s. you have to put a space in between kj and 66 in your search. also how do i know how many wavy's to put in? the directions say 15 newtons on force. if everything on mine bottoms out without slop and i don't know how much free space is in the bearing pocket how do I know when i''m at the right preload ? lI will post pics but you can look on ebay and see my parts though.

only one wave washer should be there..to resist the washer you must push from the turbine side towards the compressor and the play is minimal...as said before the shims may not be necessary and are used only if there is binding at the compressor diffuser interface
