here is a video of the owner and the plane you mention in one of his landings

dispite the fact that u havent notice the carbon fiber skin..do you still beleave its a defect product?

i think the airframe had too much.there is no way with proper fly, throtle managment and the recomended throws to get this failure

Hi, all
I have contacted this customer from Taiwan. He bought the small hawk over 2 years ago.He has flown over 50 landings but had many bad landings.
We asked him to send the elevator back to factory. Then we will check out what the problem is.

It looks like the whole structure is made out of Epoxy and microbaloons / earocell .....no built up structure is present i.e composite laminate combined with structural ribs or spar to take the load....it's a miracle it lasted that many flights prior to failure.
Makes one wonder what is hiding under the skin of some these models.

Hey a simple piece of ply through the centre into the stabs would help a lot.

Very interresting comments...
Wonder what ply structure is inside a carbon prop or a TOC carbon landing gear or GIANT composite bycycle frame...
The idea of composite is just the opposite to safe the weight. As far as i know composite materials are fragile but strong. If it was damaged it need replacing....
But then i absolutely know nothing about about composite materials and maybe an expert can help me out...

it would last way longer if the Elevator its been used only to fly and not to stress it for example: like the landing on the video
that was a big shock for all the airframe.
so i will agree with you! ....it's a miracle it lasted that many flights prior to failure with that kind of use

i agree with delgatogrande it is from the way way he use the aircraft . composite parts are strong but it doesn't bend it cracks. i also agree with lavi rider
there should be some stractural ribbs or atleast to support the weakpoints of the aircraft .

Hi Morne,
Plywood is also a composite (of wood and glue) Which is why wooden, solid or laminated props are even found on fullsize aircraft, even U/C. But no props are made from microbaloons...
The problem (if there is one) could be that the sharp corners of the box structure is unsupported and therefore it will tear easily, especially since one edge is on a joining seam. Composites like glass and even worse Carbon tears very easy. They are very good in tensile but not shear or pressure. For tear resistance kevlar is used. In this case a support spar or even more layers of glass in just that small area will solve the issue. But the landing damage clearly played a part.
I still remember your (correct) concern for the damage my Roo had before I flew it again. It blew apart midair and I was lucky not to have hurt anyone. I learned a lesson that day.
Greetings
Andre
BTW is Oudshoorn scale on this year?

I am amazed the jet lasted for 50 landings before suffering structural failure. He has no grounds for complaint whatsoever.

What's wrong with the landing in the video?? All my landings look like that!

Maybe so, but we never hear you complaining about them either.

Somewhere in most of us there's that little voice right before touchdown that says "Don't be afraid."
