BOOMERANG ELAN - New Build & Setup Thread!

RE: BOOMERANG ELAN - New Build & Setup Thread!
Sorry to tell you this now, but the Elan fibreglass fus will discolour (yellow) behind the vent when fuel leaves it, you can get over this by having a sort of pitot pointing towards the flight direction to give some positive pressure to the vent, as it is at the moment the fuel will be sucked out of the vent and cause yellowing of the underside.

for what its worth, I would not use 821 servos for the flaps.. if you put them down a little fast they will strip out.. been there done that.. I also stripped an HS-635 carbonite.. After that I have been using old 2721 metal gear analogs or any metal gear and no issues..

I second the fuel staining.. use a tube with a 45 in your vent.. I had ugly streaks down the belly.. since using tubing with a 45 in new jets, no staining..

Question to the community...
In order to reduce the weight of the landing gear assembly I was thinking about to replace the current main landing gear straight struts (1/2", 1/4" axle, 3" wheel) by off set strut (7/16", 3/16" axle, 2,5/8" wheel) since I have two sitting around. Would be a good idea? Would the new ones withstang the expected landing loads?

RE: BOOMERANG ELAN - New Build & Setup Thread!
I have recently completed an Elan with a Jetcat P100RX and I am using Trailing link retracks whick are air up spring down which work very well only one air tank is required for retracts and brakes I enploy the KIS principle (keep it simple) nor presssure gauges no fuel shut off taps. A method I was advised byba leading jet builder and flyer here in the UK.
Yor thread is very intersedting and you have gone to a lot of trouble to achieve the perfevt model whick can only result in a very good model to fly I look forward to your first flight report

Listen, what can you tell me about the Elan performance with the P100RX? I'm asking because I will have a set up similar to yours in terms of turbine thrust and weight.

Hi Mucio
The Elan is great with the Jetcat P100RX the power to weight is over one to one which gives more than enough verticle climb-out also it reduces the overall weight, mine comes out at dead on 20.5 Lbs (9.29KG).
I must add that this is my first Jet Model and the ease of operation of the new Jetcat RX power units is fantastic straight out of the box, a test first start to match tranny and then the first flight, fantastic a very impressive combination.
Best regards

Hi Eric,
I'm also building an elan at the moment, it's my first jet build.
Like yourself, I have trailing link retracts, are yours Jet1A ? I was wondering if you know exactly how thick a spacer you needed under the front retract ?
Thanks

Hi Stuart
Yes I have the same retracts, I added over 12.5 mm spruce bearers to get the correct level it now sits great and when fully assembled looks the part
Cheers

Hi Eric thanks, your 12.5mm figure is a lot less than 20mm - which Dave W thought but wasn't totally sure
Did your nose leg come out within the cut-out lines marked on that nose cover ? I've noticed looking around that some people's legs come out right up the front, and others within the cut-out
Thanks
Stuart

Hi Stuart
My nose leg came out within the cut-out, I must say the jet A1 set are fantastic I do like the air up and spring down which cuts out any air leak problems also the Elan as many other jets park on the wheels so you can unload the air tank.
Cheers

Hi Stuart
Dave W is a great inspration and has been a great help from the very start when I first enquired about the Elan and Jetcat P100RX I have followed his advise to the letter and the end result is very pleasing.
I am an aging Petrol Head with may large models under my belt and now having entered into Jets have found a new and challenging aspect to my hobby.
I hope all goes as well with your project as mine has proven to do,
Cheers

Preparing the final steps in the turbine installation. Since the Wren 100 has a small diameter I enlarged a bit the aircraft mounts. Opened the holes for blind nuts.

That's unfortunate. IMO, the Elan has the best ''looks'' of all the Boomers. Sad to hear this.

Have to admit, I think the Sprint fly's better than the Elan.
