Do jets make your car stink?

I'm just curious. The couple folks I've seen with turbines either have a trailer or pickup truck. For those of you that stuff them into a SUV or van, do the vehicles smell like kerosene?

RE: Do jets make your car stink?

Nope . . . unless you have a spill.

yes and it's a great smell........

I haul mine in the SUV and the smell is gone by the next day usually. some folks will wrap the tank in a large garbage bag and tie it shut.

Yep. MIne does but I don't mind. I have a freashner in there for the folks that have to ride in it. Like Mark said. It's gone in a day or so.

It is enevitable when you are hauling jets, fuel cans and assorted smelly support gear in an suv there will be some kero smell lingering in the car. I drove an explorer for many years and tried my best to be carefull but just about everyone that got in my car said the same thing...i smell fuel in here...[:@]. This past year i bought a pick up and solved the problem, jets and fuel in the back!! I run reg kero and there is much less odor than with JetA but both vapors are harmfull to breathe in so taking precaution is the best way. I would suggest you get a truck or trailer to haul your jets.

Jet-A odor is no problem in my Surburban, However I have had some complaints of some other strange smell...:D ( I've dropped a few Daiseycutters in there on occasion ). It totaly mask the Kero smell !!!!! I put one of those Pine Tree air freshners in there once, and a buddy of mine got in to go with me somewhere, and he said " My God !!!! Smells like somebody S#^% a Christmas Tree in here "!!!!!:D.... That was the end of that idea !!!!.... The trailer is a great Idea, but I sleep in mine sometimes.. Probly not a good idea.

No issues when i drug my stuff around in van. Then again, i'm used to horrible smells in small compartments. Dibrom smell lingers for years and i get to smell that on a daily basis on work. So kero/Jet-A is a welcomed change.

Your suburban smells like a cesspool[:@]. Get leather seats next time. They tend not to absorb odors as much.:)

Jet A1 seems to smell more than domestic Kero, I always empty my tank before leaving the field and plug all the vent lines on the jet and the bowser and my car does not smell of Kero at any time, but this could be due to the cigar's I smoke in the car LOL.

Our cat Martin could evacuate a basketball arena when he floats a biscuit...now that stinks.

Spilled Jet-A is the aroma of freedom!

I've hauled jets in Vans, SUV's, full size airplanes and travel trailers......never had any lingering kero smell at all. Mind you, I do empty the main tanks and plug the vents... Had two friends that dumped a whole jug of kero in transport inside their passenger vehicle, and they suffered for months with the smell.......

I last flew last weekend, and the weekend before that, kept all my gear and Kero in my SUV until this morning. picked up my daughter this afternoon and I asked her if she could smell it, and she did NOT. dont spill it and you will be just fine.

In my Caravan I put down a plastic tarp. On top of that goes some of those cheap Harbor Freight moving blankets. A spill gets absorbed by the blankets and they are easy to hang out to dry. At the end of the flying season the blankets get replaced and the tarp goes into storage for next year.

That is a wise approach.

I had a hose that became disconnected from my 5 gallon container and flood my Town and Country, I had to cut the carpeting and pad out and throw it away to get rid of the smell... good thing the T&C is only used to haul my jets:D:D:D

Sheesh...can you imagine what you would have had to do if Jack had ridden in the van after eating some corn dogs, lima beans and beer?

The horror...the horror...

When I flew in Top Gun '08, we had a contestant with us (I won't name him :D) in our tent that spilled a complete 5 gallon jug of JET-A in his rented car's trunk... It went un-noticed until he stopped at the event to un-load.[X(]

... carpeting and liner removed, he did his best to clean it up... it still reeked!

If you went near it for just a short period of time you'd get an 'ice cream head-ache'... I don't know how it turned out for him back at the rental office. :)

Try putting a couple of "Bounce" laundry softener sheets in the car. They will absorb the odors. Throw them away and replace as needed. They usually do the trick.
