RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
The sad thing is there are actually people out there that believe the hoax theory. My father worked on guidance for the Apollo program, it bothers me beyond belief that there are any doubts. I was there for the Apollo 15 launch, remember change rattling in my pocket and license plates vibrating on cars from 8 miles away as the Saturn V did it's thing. Etched in my memory like stone. I have never witnessed such a lack of a basic knowledge of Physics, photography and general common sense that some of these nay-sayers proclaim.
Dan P.S. Santa though is bringing my P200 - right???? |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Oh - and my Avatar says it all. That's Apollo 8 just on it's way....
Bring back the Saturn V!!!!! |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
One of the hoax theorists claim that the camera used could not have worked on the moon. It had no insulation and the sun side of the moon is up to 123 deg C. Therefore the film would have been ruined. Now I'm no NASA scientist but isnt the one of the best insulations know to man a true vacuum? The film is incased in a hollow box suspended on a frame. It would have been surrounded inside and out by a vacuum. Seems like it is well insulated against the heat. Oh also that temp is of the surface of the moon, there is also a vacuum between the surface and the camera, suspended above the surface by about 4 feet.
|
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
OK, I just read the whole wiki link to disprove the hoax theories, there are good points to both sides, this being the reason I'm not sold on any side. I was not there when the Saturn Vs where firing, but man from what you say I wish I where... i'm 23, so not a chance! Lol
Cficav8r, the temperature off the surface would not be the only problem, the sun would be hitting the camera would it not? Earth is also completely surrounded by vacuum, does it not get hot? in vacuum of space, heat is carried over by radiated heat. Please don't flame me, I just really like debates, and would gladly try to shot down arguments from both sides, or try at least! |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Yes the case would heat up due to the intense sunlight (projected energy) impacting the case, however radiant heat requires an atmosphere or direct contact to transfer the heat. The heat on the case would dissipate rapidly due to the lack of heat surrounding the case. Earth maintains its heat due to the atmosphere. As you ascend through the atmosphere towards space the temp drops rapidly.

RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Gutao, I think that it is not very polite debating this subject in a u.s. based forum, besides the fact that there is not a single reason you can´t go to the moon with the gear available in 1969. ;)
and believe me, we are going to get back there sooner or later with better technology. abração, Enrique |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Nothing wrong with a little friendly debate with our southern brothers. We're all Americans.

RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
God George!!
You fooled me, love the trek poster as well... Felt like doing that myself... |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Ok, some fisics 101: heat can be transfered in 3 diferet ways; conduction, radiation, and mass transfer
In vacum, the only forms of heat trasnfer is radiation (what you called projected energy) AND conduction to whatever maters are directly touching. In a atmosfere there is also a phenom called convective heat transfer witch is notting more then conduction associated with the dinamic of fluids (this case air as a fluid) HEAT = energy = it does not disapear or is created, it has to be changed and/or go somewhere. Vacum is not able to hold energy, so it has te be iradiated "The heat on the case would dissipate rapidly due to the lack of heat surrounding the case" this is not true, the reason being that the only way to dissipate the heat would be to send it back to space, there would be no atmospehre. And also, by this argument, the surface of the moon would also lose it's heat, and not get warm, however the temperature of the moons surface can reach up to 240 degress Fahrenheit in a moon day. I like physics! |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Hey Enrique, I think a healthy discussion is good anywhere, and having lived a fair part of my life in the USA (and loving it)
I just don't really feel like an outsider. I still go "up" a couple times a year, and have friends come over all the time too. Plus I learned to enjoy debates when I was on the debate team in highschool living in pittsburgh.I do miss that. If I'm ofending anyone, I do apologise. Get some pro hoax and I'll try to shot that down too. Abraço forte, Gutão |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Great to hear that, thx Cfircav8r / Gutao.
|
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Like you said conduction removes the heat from the areas, only those in direct sunlight, being heated. The heat transfers to the entire mass of the camera and the mount and the space suit of the photographer. Very little surface area being heated and a large mass for conduction, before it ever got to the film. The radiant heat would not be sufficient to heat the film until it reached the visible spectrum, and even then it would be minimal.

RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
What lead's you to believe that the Mercury missions were all fake as well. The camera's were exposed to somewhat the same environment as the moon when orbiting the earth. Am I right?
[sm=confused.gif] |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
I'm saying the cameras would have worked fine as opposed to the theory that the film would have been ruined.
|
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Lets not forget that the "MythBusters" proved the skeptics wrong and proved the moon landings to be real ! also a footnote, the last apollo mission was cancelled due to funds being shifting over to the vietnam war ( a historical fact).
|
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
cfircav8r, my last comment was not directed in the direction that the Apollo mission was a hoax. I firmly believe that it did happen.

RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
So, its the moon that is causing global warming. Or was that the ice age. Did I miss something?

RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
ORIGINAL: BaldEagel You ought to add the downwind turn myth. Oh yeah and Margert Thacher was a man in drag. Mike |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Personally I just love the fact that the USA managed to do one of THE most complicated, complex, dangerous, impressive and most sought after things for the whole of man-kind.. Just for its people to say it wasnt real. And not to mention the fact that it was all done by space craft with 2% the computing power of your average mobile phone.
You guys made it to the moon.. why cant you just be proud of the guys who risked their lives for your country and get over it. Some of us other countries who have had inventors like my home country of Scotland (anesthesia, telephones, TV´s (shared with usa), golf.. loads of things).... are extremely proud of the achievements. end of. |

Here is one to add to the list:
"your politicians are telling the truth and working on your behalf". |

Come on, They are just figures (politicians) the real runners of government are the departments in the back rooms.

RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Oh my vote is that you should add the
"its not a real RC jet video if its not set to "Kenny logans"." Cummon people.. stop using that bloody song. it was original 15 years ago. |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
ORIGINAL: BaldEagel You ought to add the downwind turn myth. Oh yeah and Margert Thacher was a man in drag. Mike I thought people of the UK can't speak negatively about their political figures... present or past. No? BTW, I think she was kinda hot back in her day...:D;):D |
RE: Pick your favorite Myth:
Um.... Can we move on from the Thatcher point... wow, now we know where Mike Myers gets his fascination with the British and their teeth in Austin Powers :D
