RE: Getting Out Of The Hobby

When I flew FS there was a standing joke among our local pilots. " Hello I'm (insert name) with the FAA. I'm here to help you. I assure you this hobby does not want the FAA's help. But I'm confident that we will get it anyway.

RE: Getting Out Of The Hobby

Why dont you post a blind poll and ask the variable questions of why ? (money, political, boredom, change of priority so on).

I myself was a jet fanatic for 15yrs went to multiple events, had 15-20 jets in the hanger at any given time . Now I have sold off all jets, keeping only the ones I make myself . This comes from two reasons . Closing my two companys ( of 21yrs) so I really do not have the extra funds to play with the high end stuff anymore and second the hight of the Jet arena was in the 90's -early 00's with the development of the modelers jet engine created a craze.

Back then I had more money than time , nowdays I have more time than money. So I have gone back to where I enjoyed the hobby. I build kits make my own and enjoy it . It does not cost me an arm or a second born to to play. But I am still active in the hobby just in a different perspective.

I have watched the jet arena over a couple of decades and my conclusion is it has slowly outpriced itself in todays enviroment.

This doesn't have to do with politics, it's just some
-hole in the FAA trying to get "$$" out of some people.
As a matter of fact this most probably was the hysteria
that resulted from 9/11. I know it's a good thing to fly secure,
but everyday is getting more a pain trying to go from one
place to another by plane. Someone is trying to mix things
in the FAA.
But this is not the fact why are you leaving the hobby.
I most surely would think as others- economy-.

Northrop F5, Nice small jet with two PTA’s for double safety.
Good luck and keep them in the air!

RE: Getting Out Of The Hobby

My .02 cents.

I have a few ideas.

One, economy, face it 5-20k wrapped up in one airplane is a luxury and really does nothing other than entertain. It would never pass any financial litmus test. Sure there is some stress relief but only while building. Flying a jet is not relaxing, going to the field and seeing friends is, but the 5 minutes of flight is far from "mind numbing". If you want that you need a Radian a 2100Mah pack and a lawn recliner and iPod.

Two, Kinetic hobbies and leaving the house have lost appeal. How many young kids do you have at your field that stare at the sky enamored with flight like we did as kids. The prestige and beauty of flight is gone with the younger generation, just buy a commercial ticket on and major and you will see that.

Three, Jets just like helis used to be much more costly and unattainable and more rare. At our field a few years ago flying would stop and everyone would flock to a jet starting up. Now one jet is sometimes seen as a nussiance. The last "everyone paying attention" was when we flew 4 jets at once and two of use were mixing it up fighter style. Part of me knows half the people just wanted to see a midair.

Four, EDF's, this crowd does not know the difference between EDF and Turbine. It is middle ground enough that it is not a prop and 1/20 the cost???

Five, See number ONE.

Hi,

Yeah, if they do ban jets (which I seriously doubt will ever, ever happen), then I'll just put a free-spinning prop on the front of mine and let it windmill.

RE: Getting Out Of The Hobby

Also don't fully understand the doom and gloom approach to the FAA hoopla, Even if everything went as planned with our efficient government (laugh now). None of this matters till first quarter 2013. So in a nutshell it is 2 years of business as usual so if you have the jet bug or already have it, there is plenty of time to live it up???

The FAA is so bad off they can't even enforce medical certificates in the GA world or keep FBO's from using pencils on books inlieu of wrenches. I have no idea how or who would ever have the time to police the RC community after they have to police all the start up UAS companies.

HellcatAce 02-08-2011 12:32 PM

RE: Getting Out Of The Hobby

The dollar is weak as hell and we don't hardly make a darn thing here anymore. The jet stuff that is made here is pricey. Now they every right to charge what they want based on the cost of having a domestic enterprise, especially when it is of higher quality most of the time.

The FAA can and will do whatever they want...remember their slogan..."We're not happy until you're not happy"

My opinion is that if our government can't keep foreign drug lords from literally taking over hundreds of square miles of US territory with little intervention other than posting signs to stay out, then how the heck are they going to stop a bunch of guys burning some kero in the desert?

People are gonna do what they want, even if the goverment burns the whole bill of rights!

Gerry,

I am not interested in jets, only did want to give you a solution for the situation when jets are banned in the USA.
Was engineer for the Nortroph NF5 so did see enough jets.

Cees

Interesting that you are also in the Netherlands. Same as Digitech who suggested that we invade a country, and pave it. We discussed this here, and Monaco was mentioned (we want a small country) but discarded because the casino would compete with the jets, besides it is way too hilly. So we looked at Louxemburg. It was tempting. We want to invade and pave something centrally located in Europe, close to fun places. So, they voted to pave and invade a small country that is all flat. The only problem is that is has a lot of cannals and small dams, and is jam packed with bikes...:-) We will see what happens, it was reported that in spring it is also jampacked with tulips... Your prop solution was duly noted.

That was nice because I did have to think about paving our country but you are all living on the other side of the ocean so I am not afraid and couldn;t make the joke.
BTW Digitech is also clever, don't you think so!

I thought his comment was indeed funny:-) But do not go crazy on us, or we send Halliburton over, and pave whatever is not moving...

With this new dictatorship style government that we've had

LOL,

I always wonder what people who actually live under real dictatorships think of us when we talk like this. Over here, when our 'side' loses an election, we call the other guys dictators and socialists and such. In other places, when their 'side' loses an election, some people have hours to get out of the country before they get disappeared by the new government. This kind of thing happens all over the world, all of the time. Yep, elections do matter. At least we get to have them. Count your blessings and remember that even when legislation you don't like is passed, it's after free and democratic elections (when sometimes people on the other side of the issue win). I've spent some time in countries where this isn't the case, so again...count your blessings.
Shaun,
Tell that to the citizens of NYC who have a mayor who decided on his own that he could change the law and run for a third term and now that it's coming to an end, he's changing it back to two terms for the next mayor. I could start to list the draconian ways of Bloomberg but then we would be getting into political talk. If you even bothered to read what cowboy said you wouldn't have had to start the whole "my side their side stuff. He said the last four or five years. That would include both sides.

Marty,

Don't read more into that than there is. Of course the third term thing is ridiculous. The only thing more ridiculous than that was his explanation as to why it was necessary. Term limits are there for a reason, and they should be left alone...period. The 'sides' thing wasn't in response to what time frame he referred to (although I have a feeling it was referring to '06), it was to the use of the term "dictatorship." I think it's not only silly to think of our country that way, but very insensitive and disrespectful to people who ACTUALLY have to live their lives under that kind of oppression and are not just whining. I hear and read that kind of talk every day and I think it is yet another thing that makes us Americans look really stupid in the eyes of the rest of the world. Flame suit on.

Very interesting perspective. I have been thinking along similar lines for the discipline I am heavily involved in: some of the high end stuff costs an arm and a leg (but not as much as jets) so I have almost always built my own.

On the other hand, guys tie up 10G+ on top level 40% IMAC thoroughbreds all the time and this side of the sport doesn't seem to be slowing much

You are right, of course. It is sad, but if you look at what party uses this discourse "dictatorship" you realize it is the sore loosers. It is the party that governed for 8 years, and then lost the election because of their desastrous performance. Yes, they are also ignorants in that they do not realize what they say insults people that atually ARE under a dictatorship right now. Most likely they do not have the brain to see this, and we cannot help them (nor can they help themselves). It is sad, but we cannot do a thing about it. It really was not until the Internet became mailstream that one was able to realize how uneducated and naive a lot of people are in this country of ours.

They are beautiful, no doubt. In Spain, in the south they have hills and hills covered with a newer version. Similar to yours, but bigger, white, and they generate electric power. Not sure if they are protected....

As you know, one of Spain historic literature figures did fight one of these "shredders", and lost, Don Quijote... I would not fool around with them either...

Shaun,
Your point is well taken. True we do not live under a dictatorship and when we use the term to explain our current situation, it is an exaggeration and seems insensitive to those who actually live under one but to try and curb or censor someone from saying something that may insult or offend another person or group is in itself dictatorial. As this country in particular becomes more and more politically correct, we are going to slowly lose our right to free speech. Individuals and groups now feel they have the "Right" to not be offended and then when they are, they expect apologies and firings. Oh and BTW, I think we should stop worrying how we "look" to the rest of the world but that's just my opinion.

RE: Getting Out Of The Hobby

Gerry,

The story of Don could be more interesting than we all think, the unknown enemy!

I read in one of the messages in this thread: 10 G!
10G? who knows? Only we.

People aren’t afraid of 10 G, they are afraid of a bullet, speed, a fast flying jet.
But, you all say, we do use high qualified digital dual conversion 2048 bit radio systems with telemetry feedback, so don’t be afraid!!!!

But when someone asks you: "What is the speed?"

"Yes uh. Don’t know, but we can measure that and for that we need a radar gun!"

"Radar gun?" "We are afraid of bullets and guns so no guns please!"

Gerry, attack is the best way to defend and I show you something maybe you can use.

For a long time I do develop and use all kind of instruments, in the past also for real gliders but in this period for my models.
One of the most interesting parts is an airspeed controller. Airspeed is controlled by controlling the throttle of the IC engine of my plane. Known constant speed for me, no stall, not any downwind turn problem (if it ever excist!!), no over speed. Speed within a narrow band of a few km/h adjusted with my throttle stick when selected "cruise control".

A short time back I discovered also Jetcat has this option!!!

Using an airspeed controller gives me the possibility to use the argument, what ever happen my speed is never exceed 75 mph. I can show, in a dive the engine will immediately throttle back.

So do control all directions during flight. All!!!
Also the length axle, in length direction, even it does not has to do with G’s. and use it as an argument to show jets can be save because also the speed is under control and always reduced under a safe limit.

Think about that and maybe you can use it to keep them in the air and never come to the Netherlands to pave our beautiful country .

Taurus Cruise Controller.

(pff hope this helps)

I've been just wandering recently, that there are increasing number of
fellow jet fliers quitting this hobby, and selling all their stuff. Any ideas
as to why is this happening? Or is the uncertainty of what's going on
with the FAA?

ENT
I've been in this hobby since the 1970's. I have observed the hobby ebb and flow, grow and retract several times. It just does that. You can't really blame the economy either. Often a bad economy actually brings people to RC.

For most people the hobby is a passing phase in thier life. It often last about 5 years. The Jet guys are a little different. What do they fly next ? What comes after flying Jets? If Jets don't get you off then the chances are some giant Extra, that flies like a Cub, isn't going to do much for you either. Face it. You are done. It is time for Sky Diving.:D

I'd guess the uncertainty.

With this new dictatorship style government that we've had over the last 4 or 5 years it will be no surprise if our hobby is regulated out of existence.

Elections really do have consequences after all, be it in the AMA or the US government.

Rome anyone?
The Founding Fathers are probably shaking their heads at the pathetic state of government we have today... Government employees don't solve problems or create jobs.

Your point is well taken as well. Funny, I thought we were moving away from political correctness (at least lately), not closer. I've never had a lot of patience for PC, but I also see a difference between PC and common courtesy. For example, calling a handicapped person "differently abled" is not only PC, but also patronizing in my opinion. However, if I referred to a disabled person that way, and they asked me to call them "differently abled", then I would regard it as common courtesy to call someone whatever they wish to be called.

As for what the rest of the world thinks, we'll have to agree to disagree. The fat cats and corps have sold our country out and shipped off all of the jobs overseas. We've out-sourced ourselves to the point of being near economic ruin while China and India are enjoying an ascent into the middle class. To me, those are good enough reasons to care where we stand in the court of world opinion. Here in San Diego, a startling number of the foreclosed homes have been sold to mainland Chinese businesses by the banks. Maybe I should at least care what they think since they're about to be my neighbors...

I'm as much of a red-blooded American as the next guy, but I'm also a citizen of the world, as I have friends (and relatives) in many different countries. People are all the same everywhere, with the same concerns and basic needs as far as I'm concerned, so I don't regard foreigners as foreign.
