RE: Whats up with this crap?

The Mac vs PC discussion is one no-one can win, since there is no real difference, it's just what you're used to.

Well setup and sensibly used both platforms are very capable.

If you have a PC and you're fed up with windows, download and install Ubuntu (linux).

Whichever platform you choose, install an appropiate anti-virus solution (and avoid Norton as the plague) and a good anti-spyware solution and keep things (operating system, anti-virus, anti-spyware) up-to-date, and use some common sense.

Nice feature of the Apple products, is that they integrate well. Most of the neat tricks are available for PC's as well, but on Apple it's easier to set up.

Mac, natural selection at its best... ;)

PC sales are in the decline, but Mac sales are up above and beyond every PC manufacturer... so yes, natural selection at its best, but it depends on which side of the fence you're on.

Hilarious, and your market share did shoot up to what? 8%? The force is shifting for Apple. Steve just quit as head today.

Gerry
What is this ''your'' business. I own the same number of PCs as I do Macs. As a manufacturer, they have positive computer sales, where almost everyone has negative growth.

Steve Jobs resignation will have little product impact. Cook has been running Apple for awhile.

Translation, the tools we use do for eons did not run in Macs, now you can have them run, but why? My office has 4 Dells.

Steve Jobs absence will impact the future of Apple. He was a control freak, and a genius w/o doubt.

Gerry
PS: Actually the market share went up to 10%. 90% PC's 10% Macs. I have colleagues that use mac, and they seem to have a personal attachment. For me, it's a tool, and I cannot wait to get a new one:-)

Seriously, who goes to Compusa? There is a reason why they've been shutting down stores left and right.

I don't know squat about computers, I really don't. What I do know, is that 3 or so months ago, out computers HD seized, we lost everything. We decided after having crappy luck with having computers "built" for us, that we would just go to best buy and buy a cheap computer.
We bought an HP laptop, within a month, the HD failed on it. They replaced it with some other brand as a desktop (we didn't care if it was a laptop or desktop). After only ONE day the Harddrive failed. We now have an Acer tower which so far is working fine.
Everyone told me "GET A MAC". Well, we use the computer very little, the Acer tower we bought was $400. It was 4X that amount to get ANY Mac. At the same time as we were having issues, a friend of ours bought a Macbook or something along those lines (Mac laptop looking thing). It was $2600. In the same amount of time as our issues, he's had it replaced 4 times. Biggest difference is he's had to pay to ship it back for "warranty" 4 times now as the store wouldn't just give him a new one. After the 4th time failure, he's gone back to a PC.

None of these computer problems were software or virus related, every single one was component failure. Another friend of mine who is a computer scientist told me he's not surprised to hear of the Mac failures either, the hardware is all made by the same companies....

So my options are spend $400 for a piece of crap that will eventually fail, or spend $1600+ on a piece of crap that will eventually fail. Electonics today suck, the new computers all seem to fail within a couple years. My 12 year old Dell at work still ticks over without missing a beat. It lives in the worst possible hot/cold, dusty, damp, crappy conditions any computer could be in, but it keeps going.

The PC/Mac debate is like JR/Futaba/Hitec. Everyone has their opinion, but when you read the threads, everyone has had failures. Again, today's electronics all suck...... I hate to say it, but it's true, the further technology progresses, the more reliability seems to decline.....

I work on PC's since the 8088 chip (Before windows). At the beginning I replaced computers every year or 2 now 3 (maybe). I learned that the most important is customer service (because ALL WILL FAIL at some point in time). That is why I use Dell, you can call the XPS number anytime and in no time flat you talk to somebody, and solve the problem. We have 4 Dells.

HP is getting out of the tablet business, and will sell the PC business for what I heard. They have great printers.

Yeah, but nobody is going to be willing to pay the price (like 7K for a laptop that will be old anyway in 2 years).

Sad to say I will not see it happen in my lifetime...

First of all, what does a computer scientist know about hardware? Second, a Mac Mini is $600, so not exactly 4x more than your Acer.

O and for the person who said this "PC sales are in the decline, but Mac sales are up above and beyond every PC manufacturer... so yes, natural selection at its best, but it depends on which side of the fence you're on." needs to do some home work bc MACs are not on the incline over PC its iPads that are in the incline.

Ppl are buying simple things, most want a development machine. an editing machine and some want to surf, respond to email...etc, a PC is slightly overkill for that so iPads and things like them are on the rise.

I really do not have the numbers to back this up, but in my experience (for what I saw) maybe the Macs are used more in some areas than others. I have clients and friends in CA and a lot of them also use Macs.

Here on the east coast, you rarely see a Mac in an office (unless it is an office where they do heavy graphics, or publishing).

Besides, with all the "Apple computer boom, and increase in sales" they reached finally the point that 1 in every 10 computers is a Mac, so, it's not like they are prevalent or anything of the sort. Particularly if most are used in the "other" coast.

Yes, the most important filter or "virus" control is the user. You have to learn what not to click on:-) The only bad virus problem I had was with the "Love Virus". I had just translated a piece called "We love to be wrong", and I got an attachment with the word "love". Big mistake. When I realized what it was, I unplugged the computer. That afternoon when the antivirus procedure came out for that virus, I solved the problem. I lost like 1500 files, but I resetted the computer to the prior day, and problem solved.

That was the only virus that caused a problem in over 2 decades of continuous PC usage. I was unable to use that computer from 8AM to 2PM. Of course I do not open or download stuff unless I know what it is... The antivirus updates daily and runs every 2nd night, the backup runs once per day, the computers are on 24/7, never a problem.

I did have a "annoyingware" issue one year ago, but it was easy enough to solve.

Gerry

Totally depends on what you use the thing for.
If you're in the visual creative industry, and generating content, you're using a mac...no matter what coast you're on.
But, if you want all of your coworkers to be able to work...on that spreadsheet you slaved over...without compatibility issues,
then it's probably easier to have the same thing as the rest of them have, which they have, because they always have had.
If your running a cnc machine, I doubt that there are any programs for the mac.
The criticizing of a 10% figure in a "2% of-the-hobby" forum is rich. I would think most of you would prefer to be associated with the 10%'ers.

Digressing...it's all about intuitiveness for me. Apples' always had that in droves.

Apple Cracks 10% PC Market Share For First Time in Decades
Share62

By Leander Kahney (2:16 pm, Oct. 13, 2010)

As Apple prepares to show off the next big upgrade of OS X, here’s news that its Mac hardware has cracked 10% PC market share for the first time since the early 1990s.

According to market research firm Gartner, Apple had 10.4% of U.S. PC shipments in Q3, making it the fourth largest computer maker in the U.S.

Gartner didn’t even count iPads, which are a runaway hit. But they had an effect on other PC makers’ numbers. Gartner said Q3 was weak, especially in the U.S., thanks in big part to the iPad.

“Media tablet hype around devices such as the iPad has also affected consumer notebook growth by delaying some PC purchases, especially in the U.S. consumer market. Media tablets don’t replace primary PCs, but they affect PC purchases in many ways,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, in a statement. “At this stage, hype around media tablets has led consumers and the channels to take a ‘wait and see’ approach to buying a new device.
